Now, with Republicans in control of the House, the fate of the overhaul is again in play. On Wednesday, splitting along party lines, the House Agriculture Committee voted to delay by 18 months implementation of rules governing derivatives, the kind of complex financial instruments that were blamed for putting the financial system in jeopardy. Opponents of Maryland immigrant tuition bill say referendum plan is on track

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Opponents of legislation designed to give college tuition breaks to illegal immigrants in Maryland say they are on track to collect the thousands of signatures needed to try to overturn the measure that passed the General Assembly last month. Del. Neil C. Parrott (R-Washington) and Del. Pat McDonough (R-Baltimore County) are leading the effort to give voters a say in whether to uphold the bill. Parrott said volunteers in most of Maryland’s counties are gathering signatures and spreading the word at grocery stores and community events that “our tax dollars are going to fund illegal aliens,” he said. “Now is not the time to be spending money on what is an unlawful program.” Read full article > >

Done

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Wow : By a vote of 63 to 33, with six Republicans joining Democrats, the Senate acted to cut off debate on a measure that would let President Obama declare an end to the Clinton-era policy, known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which allows gay members of the armed forces to serve only if they keep their sexual orientation a secret. The vote indicated that there was easily enough support to push the measure to final passage. “I don’t care who you love,” Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, said as the debate opened. “If you love this country enough to risk your life for it, you shouldn’t have to hide who you are.” Let us resolve to ignore all pop campaign strategist masquerading as journalists. Majorities are meant to be fucking used.

"Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" Repeal Fails in Senate

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

The Senate failed to pass a repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy on Thursday. The 57-40 vote stopped just short of the 60 necessary to lift the ban on gays serving openly in the military. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was the only member of the GOP to vote in favor of a DADT repeal, with Sens. Scott Brown (R-Massachusetts) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) backing away from their initial support of the measure. Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia was one of a minority of Democrats voting no on the repeal. read more
