European Union approves Microsoft’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype

BRUSSELS — The European Commission approved Friday the proposed $8.5 billion acquisition of the Internet phone and video communication provider Skype by Microsoft Corp., saying the deal would not significantly impede competition in Europe. Google’s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, faced a barrage of questions from lawmakers Wednesday about whether his company’s search engine stifles competition as he insisted it has not violated its famous “don’t be evil” motto. Schmidt, who had never testified on Capitol Hill, began his highly anticipated testimony by invoking the memory of Microsoft’s Bill Gates, who walked the same gantlet before the Senate Judiciary Committee’s antitrust panel during the 1990s. Bill Gates tops Forbes’ 2011 list of wealthiest Americans

LOS ANGELES — The nation’s economic woes don’t appear to be hurting Bill Gates, who tops Forbes’ list of the 400 richest Americans for the 18th year in a row. The magazine said Wednesday that the Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist’s wealth amounts to $59 billion, ranking him ahead of all the other billionaires who make up this year’s list. Microsoft said Tuesday it agreed to buy Skype for $8.5 billion in cash, the company’s biggest bet yet against Google, Apple and Facebook, who are leading the race to bring Internet services to any device. Through its acquisition of Luxembourg-based Skype, Microsoft bought the world’s biggest Internet voice and video calling service, with 170 million users around the globe. In a conference call with reporters, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said Skype’s service will meld with the Redmond, Wash., company’s diverse range of businesses to help it woo more customers who play games, socialize and conduct work over smart phones, tablets, PCs and televisions.
