There have been four straw polls since Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann won the Ames Straw Poll on Aug. 13 , each won by a different Republican candidate. Businessman Herman Cain claimed the biggest victory, winning the P5 straw poll in Florida on Saturday . Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney won at Mackinac Island in Michigan on Sunday. And Rep. Ron Paul and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum won straw votes in California and Pennsylvania respectively. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — Long regarded as the best closer in baseball, Mariano Rivera now has more saves than anyone else, too. Rivera set the major league record with No. 602, pitching a perfect ninth inning Monday and preserving the New York Yankees’ 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins. With fans standing and cheering from his first pitch to his last, Rivera retired Trevor Plouffe, Michael Cuddyer and Chris Parmelee to end it. Parmelee looked at strike three — it appeared to be Rivera’s signature cutter — and Yankee Stadium roared in approval. Read full article > >

The applause identified Rick Perry as the crowd favorite when he took the stage in Tampa for Monday night’s Tea Party debate , greeting his lesser rivals as “fellas.” But two hours later, those fellas – and a gal from Minnesota – had made some serious progress toward exposing the broad-shouldered Texas governor as an empty suit. POINCIANA, Fla. — Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann claimed Saturday that the United States has more fuel resources than any other country, but blamed what she termed “radical environmentalists” for bottling up American energy policy. With untapped oil reserves in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and off the nation’s coasts, shale oil in Western states, and rich natural gas and coal deposits, she said the U.S. “is sitting on a mother lode of treasure.” “The United States is the number one country in the world for energy resources,” the Minnesota congresswoman told a central Florida town hall meeting, arguing that in shale deposits alone the U.S. easily outstrips the total oil supply of Saudi Arabia. “That doesn’t even include … all the oil in Alaska.” Read full article > >

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Republican presidential candidate Michelle Bachmann got her Elvis Presley dates all shook up during a campaign stop in South Carolina. The congresswoman from Minnesota played the Elvis tune “Promised Land” on Tuesday at a restaurant in Spartanburg, and told the crowd of 300 that she wanted to say happy birthday to the King of Rock and Roll. But Aug. 16 is the anniversary of Elvis’ death, in 1977, and someone in the crowd shouted back, “He died today!” Read full article > >

AMES, Iowa — One of the most oft-repeated lines heading into Thursday’s Republican presidential debate and Saturday’s closely watched Ames straw poll is that, on the campaign trail in Iowa, Rep. Michele Bachmann (Minn.) has the most passion and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty has the best organization. But on Wednesday it was Bachmann whose campaign event looked a little staged, and Pawlenty who drew more excitement, with an early-evening rally here featuring live rock music, a rousing speech by his wife, Mary, and a cheering crowd of more than 100 supporters. Updated 11:20 p.m. With the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks approaching next month, President Obama told a crowd of about 100 at the White House’s annual Iftar dinner Wednesday evening that “no matter who we are or how we pray, we’re all children of a loving God.” Obama played host to a guest list that included Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), the first Muslim American elected to Congress; Hamza Abdullah, a defensive back for the Arizona Cardinals; and Husain Abdullah, a free safety for the Minnesota Vikings. DOVER, N.H. — They don’t like identity politics and aren’t crazy about the word “feminist.” But a lot of conservative women here can’t help but rejoice that they may have a couple of tough-talking, tea-drinking mothers to choose from in the Republican primary. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is on the verge of announcing her intentions, and former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is contemplating a bid. If either runs, it would be the first time since Elizabeth Dole’s bid in 1999 that a viable female candidate has sought the Republican nomination for president. Read full article > >
