Facebook Launches Low-Tech Mobile Application for Non-Smartphones

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Still holding out until the iPhone is available on Verizon? You’ll now be able to check your Facebook account from your phone even if you haven’t joined the Android or BlackBerry elite. More significantly, a new low-tech application that the social networking site has built in coordination with developers and mobile operators will allow millions (billions?) of people in developing countries with basic phones to access their accounts. Facebook’s mobile app has been wildly popular with smartphone users–in fact, it is the most-downloaded free app for iPhone . However, smartphone users represent only part of the world’s mobile users, while feature phones dominate the global market. “As of June 2010,” writes Mashable, “feature phone owners make up a full 79 percent of all mobile phone owners. That number is even higher in countries like China and India.” That’s why the world’s largest social network has partnered with Snaptu to launch Facebook for Feature Phones, an app that will be available for download on 2,500 devices from the world’s leading manufacturers, such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and LG, to name a few. Mark Heynen, Facebook’s Mobile Program manager, announced the app’s launch in a blog post on Wednesday afternoon. “The app provides a better Facebook experience for our most popular features, including an easier-to-navigate home screen, contact synchronization, and fast scrolling of photos and friend updates,” Heynen wrote. GM Making Chevy Volts With Recycled Deepwater Horizon Oil Containment Booms

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Talk about a genius public relations move. General Motors is making the Chevy Volt even more eco-friendly by building the newest units out of partially recycled equipment used in the fight to stop Gulf oil from spreading after the Deepwater Horizon disaster earlier this year. Oil booms are, generally speaking, tube-shaped cylinders of netting which contain some material used to block the spread of oil. In the case of the Gulf oil leak , most of that internal material was polypropylene, an oil-absorbent plastic–and an awful lot of it was used, saturated with oil, and discarded. But GM is taking a multi-step process to recycle that plastic. Heritage Environmental, a waste-disposal company, collects the booms, then passes the polypropylene to Mobile Fluid Recovery, which spins the material to separate the plastic from the oil and wastewater. Then Lucent Polymers treats the oil-less plastic, passes it to a GM plant which creates parts from it, and then to a GM assembly line. Read the full story at Popular Science .

Trtl Bot Cases

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Trtl Bot’s new cases bring flexible storage and handy stands to the iPhone 4 With every new iPhone comes a flood of new accessories designed to unleash the mobile device’s full potential. The new iPhone 4 cases from Trtl Bot stand out among the crowd for their forward-thinking ability to expand the phone’s functionality without adding superfluous plastic or obtrusive packaging. The two iPhone 4 models are the new Trtl Stand 4 and the Minimalist 4, a continuation of their previous line for the 3G/S. Both cases fit the phone snugly, keeping the sleekness of the phone’s design more or less intact. The Trtl Stand 4 performs exactly how it sounds, letting you prop your iPhone up in three different ways. The different modes (Portrait, Landscape and Tripod) let you use your iPhone hands-free whether you are using Facetime, watching a movie or want to snap a steady photo. The super slim Minimalist 4 is designed for those who hate having a bulky back pocket or carry a small bag. The hard plastic case provides not only sufficient protection from falls, but the slit on the back provides enough space to stick in an I.D., credit card and metro card. Made stateside from recycled bottles, both eco-friendly cases sell online from Trtl Bot for $35.
