About the daters … Chances you’d make a friend at a bar … Najy: Depends on my mood! And whether we went with tequila shots. Sean: It might take a couple of beers. I’m a social person, but when it comes to strangers, I usually depend on my friends to introduce me or the other person to make a first move. Read full article > >

TEL AVIV — Captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit returned home Tuesday looking pale and rail thin to a country bracing itself for fallout from a prisoner swap that has emboldened the militant Palestinian faction Hamas. A subdued Israeli homecoming ceremony for Shalit stood in stark contrast to the mood in the Gaza Strip, where buses carrying the first of 1,027 Palestinian prisoners to be freed as part of the exchange were escorted by heavily armed Hamas fighters. JACKSON, Wyo. – As the world’s central bankers descend on the Grand Tetons for a closely watched annual conference, the mood in Jackson Hole is again one of profound unease. The symposium, sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, occupies a unique place in the world of economic policy. It brings together most of the globe’s top central bankers and many of the planet’s smartest economists to talk through the issues of the day. It was here one year ago that Federal Reserve chief Ben S. Bernanke signaled openness to massive bond purchases, here in 2007 that the Fed leaders plotted a response to the budding financial crisis and here in 1990 where the central bankers of the West first met their counterparts from the former Soviet bloc. For a week-long art project that ended Sunday, D.C. collector and patron Philippa Hughes hosted Agnes Bolt, a Pittsburgh-based artist and graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University, in her home. The visit, an art performance, was meant to test the boundaries of the artist-collector relationship. Testy might be the best word for the mood at Hughes’s 14th Street NW condo over the course of a week. “It has been awkward,” Bolt says. “I didn’t think it through when I agreed to it,” Hughes says.
