NEW YORK — Weeks after starring in his own story of bravery and heroism, the pilot who safely ditched his jetliner in the Hudson River received a standing ovation Saturday from the audience at a Broadway performance of “South Pacific.” At the end of the classic revival, the show’s stars introduced Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger as the pilot who set down the disabled plane within reach of rescue boats last month, saving the lives of all 155 people on US Airways Flight 1549. “It could have been tragic, but it wasn’t. It became a miracle,” said Kelli O’Hara, who plays the show’s lead female character, Nellie Forbush. “We’ve never been more honored than to perform for you, Captain.” As she spoke, a spotlight was trained on Sullenberger in the audience, and the crowd stood, cheered and applauded. The pilot’s wife, Lorrie Sullenberger, began wiping tears from her face. He hugged her, then turned back to the crowd and waved as the cheers grew still louder. Many in the audience already had recognized him. Murmurs of “look who’s here” had buzzed through the crowd during intermission. “It was quite exciting just to see this guy who saved so many lives,” said David Feldman, who found himself sitting two rows behind the pilot. “It’s so nice to have a hero who’s a real hero, instead of movie stars,” added Feldman’s wife, Ellen Schwartz. The 58-year-old pilot, his wife and their two daughters went backstage after the show and met the cast of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which tells of the romances and heroics of a group of American aviators, nurses and sailors stationed far from home during World War II. It was an appropriate choice for Sullenberger, who was named best aviator in his Air Force Academy class and served in the military from 1973 to 1980. He flew F-4 Phantom II fighter planes and served as a flight leader in Europe and the Pacific. The calm and steadiness with which he handled the Jan. 15 near-disaster _ witnesses said he walked the length of the waterlogged plane to make sure everyone got out _ could have fit right in with the feats depicted on the Lincoln Center Theater stage. A propeller plane even forms part of the show’s set. Sullenberger and his fellow crew members are in New York as part of a media blitz, including an interview with the pilot that is set to air Sunday on CBS’ “60 Minutes.” He also is expected to appear Monday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and CBS’s “The Early Show” and to receive a key to the city from Mayor Michael Bloomberg later in the day.

Following our Jan. 11 column, Connecticut’s Elections Enforcement Commission is making a “thorough investigation” of whether the conservative pundit broke the law by voting in the Nutmeg State while living in New York City, according to a commission spokeswoman. Officials are responding to a formal complaint filed by Coulterwatch.com blogger Dan Borchers. “For over 10 years, Ann Coulter has gotten away with illegal, immoral and unethical behavior, ranging from plagiarism to defamation, perjury to voter fraud,” claims the conservative Borchers. Coulter declined to comment, but in the past has branded Borchers a stalker. He says the FBI has determined he poses no threat.

Impeachment proceedings against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich begin today in the state Senate, but the embattled governor is skipping the trial and instead appearing on TV. On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Blagojevich said he considered Oprah Winfrey for President Obama’s Senate replacement. “She was obviously someone with a much broader bully pulpit than other senators,” he said.

Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, after a defiant and incoherent Friday press conference , is taking his case to television. Lynn Sweet reports on the first leg of this media marathon, from the “Today Show” Sunday : Impeached Gov. Blagojevich, on the first leg of his media blitz timed to the start of his impeachment trial, in an NBC interview broadcast on The Today Show Sunday compared himself to human rights heros Nelson Mandela, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gahdhi. … As he was taken from his home by federal agents on Dec. 9, Blagojevich told NBC, “I thought about Mandela, Dr. King and Gandhi and tried to put some perspective to all this and that is what I am doing now.” On Monday, Blagojevich will appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and with his wife on “The View.”

NEW YORK — The producers of “Speed-the-Plow” have filed a grievance with Actors’ Equity Association, the stage actors’ union, against Jeremy Piven for abruptly leaving the Broadway revival last month. News of the filing was announced Friday by lead producer Jeffrey Richards, who declined further comment. The actor quit the David Mamet comedy less than two months after it opened to favorable reviews at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. Piven’s doctor said the 43-year-old actor was unable perform because of high levels of mercury in his system, possibly caused by eating large amounts of raw fish. Piven’s publicist, Samantha Mast, called the producers’ claims “absurd and outrageous.” “He withdrew from the play due to medical necessity on the advice of his doctors, after he was hospitalized and warned by his physicians that enforced rest was necessary in order to avoid serious medical problems, including a heart attack,” Mast said in a statement Friday. No date for the grievance proceedings was announced. Earlier this week, Piven, appearing on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” defended his departure from “Speed-the-Plow.” The actor said he was diagnosed with mercury poisoning the first week of rehearsals for the play and finally succumbed to the illness when he passed out in his home. “I’ve never not completed anything in my life. … I wanted the show to continue forever,” Piven said on the early-morning television program. Piven also denied reports saying the “Entourage” star had been partying late at night and was bored with the play. He said he was embarrassed by the bad press, and “wanted to come here and say the truth, which is I was brought to my knees, from the second week of rehearsal. … And I didn’t think I would make it through previews. And I did. And I was proud of that.” William H. Macy currently is playing Piven’s role of an ambitious Hollywood producer in the production, which also stars Raul Esparza and Elisabeth Moss.

Tiger Woods, who has tried to stay out of politics during his ascent to one of the world’s most famous athletes, has accepted an invitation to speak at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday as part of President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration festivities. Woods posted a short statement on his Web site to say he would speak at “We Are One,” a concert and celebration that will be broadcast live on HBO and feature entertainers such as Beyonce, U2, Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks, along with appearances by Denzel Washington and Martin Luther King III. “I am honored that I was invited to this historic event and look forward to participating in Sunday’s festivities,” Woods said. Organizers of “We Are One” did not say what Woods would do at the Lincoln Memorial celebration. Woods rarely gets involved in political discussions and festivities. He was criticized in 1997 after his watershed victory in the Masters when he turned down an invitation from former President Bill Clinton to travel to Shea Stadium in New York to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball’s color barrier. A year ago in Dubai, when a reporter began to ask about Obama, Woods smiled and said, “Oh, God, here we go.” He then said he was impressed with how Obama and all politicians were so quick on their feet, especially in debates. “I think that he’s really inspired a bunch of people in our country, and we’ll see what happens down the road,” Woods said at the time. After Obama’s landslide victory, Woods said on CNBC he was hopeful that a black man would be elected president in his lifetime. “I think it’s absolutely incredible,” he told the cable network. “He represents America. He’s multiracial. I was hoping it would happen in my lifetime. My father was hoping it would happen in his lifetime, but he didn’t get to see it. WASHINGTON — Eighty-three of the nation’s 100 largest corporations, including Citigroup, Bank of America and News Corp., had subsidiaries in offshore tax havens in 2007, and some of the companies received federal bailout funding, a government watchdog said Friday. The Government Accountability Office released a report that said Bank of America Inc., Citigroup Inc. and Morgan Stanley all had more than 100 units in countries that maintain low or no taxes. The three financial institutions were included in the $700 billion financial bailout approved by Congress. Insurance giant American International Group Inc., which has received about $150 billion in bailout money, had 18 subsidiaries. JPMorgan Chase & Co. had 50 units and Wells Fargo & Co. had 18; both financial institutions received government bailout money. Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., who requested the report, have pushed for tougher laws to fight offshore tax havens around the globe. Levin, who leads the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has estimated abusive tax havens and offshore accounts cost the U.S. government at least $100 billion a year in lost taxes. “I think we should take action to shut down these tax dodgers and we will be introducing legislation to do just that,” Dorgan said. General Motors Corp., which received $13.4 billion from the federal rescue package, had 11 offshore subsidiaries while GM’s financing arm, GMAC LLC, had two offshore units. GMAC, whose majority owner is private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, received $5 billion from the Treasury Department in late December. Citigroup said in a statement that it has more than 4,000 subsidiaries around the globe “which enables us to serve hundreds of millions of individuals and institutions in more than 100 countries.” A News Corp. spokeswoman declined comment. Messages were left with several of the companies identified in the report. Separately, the GAO said 63 of the 100 largest federal contractors maintain subsidiaries in 50 tax havens. Levin noted that many competitors use the tax havens to varying degrees. PepsiCo Inc. has 70 subsidiaries while the Coca-Cola Co. has eight units. Caterpillar Inc. had 49 while Deere & Co. had three. “We need to put an end to the use of offshore secrecy jurisdictions as tax havens,” Levin said. The GAO said the subsidiaries could be established in the countries “for a variety of nontax business reasons” and said having a business unit in one of the countries “does not signify that a corporation or federal contractor established that subsidiary for the purpose of reducing its tax burden.” Citigroup had 427 units in 23 countries, including 91 subsidiaries in Luxembourg and 90 in the Cayman Islands. Morgan Stanley had 273 units, News Corp. had 152 and Bank of America had 115. Procter & Gamble Co. had 83 subsidiaries and Pfizer Inc. had 80 in the jurisdictions. Several major corporations have announced plans to leave Bermuda, a leading offshore business center, amid the global financial crisis and fears of tighter tax rules. Tyco Electronics Ltd., which makes electronic components, and Foster Wheeler Ltd., an engineering and construction company, are reincorporating in Switzerland _ which has a tax treaty with the U.S. _ for tax and other reasons.
