Not too shabby: Journalism has reached the point at which we can report on the death of a major sports figure — and come within a half-day of getting it right. Joe Paterno died this morning at the age of 85. That’s not long after he gave a revealing interview to The Washington Post’s Sally Jenkins. And not long after the news broke on a child-molestation scandal that tarnished Paterno’s legacy in what turned out to be his dying days. Read full article > >

In the category of Very Prompt Responses, Whole Foods in Foggy Bottom just hollered at us on Twitter after my rant this morning about its Hannukah display: “@washingtonpost The store has removed the matzo displays–color us embarrassed! Sincerest apologies if we offended anyone. Happy Hanukkah!” To which we say: thank you, Whole Foods! A Happy Hanukkah to you, too. Read full article > >

President Obama said Thursday that he supports his administration’s decision to block unrestricted sale of the morning-after pill to people younger than 17, a move that dismayed women’s advocates when it was announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. Sebelius said Wednesday that she had overruled the Food and Drug Administration, which had decided to make the contraceptive available to people of all ages directly off drugstore and supermarket shelves , without a prescription. On the morning of Friday, Nov. 18, as most of the Washington Redskins gathered for special teams meetings, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan called quarterback Rex Grossman into his office. On a flat-screen television, Shanahan ran tape of what seemed to be an innocuous play from nearly two months earlier — a third-down pass on a Monday night in Dallas, when Grossman had looked for wide receiver Terrence Austin. The play was designed to go for a touchdown, but Austin tripped, and the ball fell incomplete. Read full article > >

No, the sun didn’t rise in the west this morning. No, Republicans on the congressional supercommittee didn’t offer meaningful concessions on raising new tax revenue. And no, “both sides” are not equally responsible for the failure to compromise. As usual, the two parties began with vastly different ideas of what it means to negotiate. Democrats envisioned meeting somewhere in the middle, while Republicans anticipated not moving an inch. This isn’t just my spin, it’s a matter of public record: Before the 12-member supercommittee ever met, House Speaker John Boehner warned that they had better not agree to any new tax revenue. On Aug. 19, Maryland Coach Randy Edsall grew enraged with the lackadaisical effort he saw from his players in practice, so he gathered them in a huddle and pierced the morning air with a tirade that included this command: “Do it my way! Don’t do it your way!” While some players have embraced Edsall’s way during his first season, others have been frustrated with his approach, according to several people in and around the program. With the team ineligible to play in a bowl game, some players are now beginning to speak publicly about what they saw as a divided locker room and about the potential of prominent underclassmen transferring after the season, which continues Saturday night against Notre Dame at FedEx Field. The Nationals this morning formally announced Davey Johnson as their manager for the 2012 season, exercising an option in his contract and continuing a tenure that began last season amidst upheaval and concluded with one of the most promising stretches since baseball returned to Washington. “It really feels great,” Johnson said. “It’s such a great organization, such a great bunch of kids. We didn’t come close to the ceiling this year. I really feel like I’m kind of their father figure. I think they respect me, and I feel like I’m the guy to steer them along their path.” Read full article > >
