Markets begin week on calmer note after volatile week

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Stocks built on their morning gains in afternoon trading Monday, providing further evidence that last week’s panic selling might finally be subsiding. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average was up 143 points Monday afternoon, or about 1.3 percent. The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index, a broader market measure, was up 17 points, or about 1.5 percent. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was up 24 points, or about 1 percent. The positive results, which came on the heels of a blockbuster $12.5 billion offer by Google to buy cellphone maker Motorola Mobility, showed the markets’ gains might finally have staying power. AT&T Lays Out Plans for 4G in 2011

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Speaking at CES, Ralph de la Vega, the president and CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, laid out the company’s plans for pursuing 4G in the coming year. According to Mashable, AT&T will have nearly two dozen different devices that can utilize 4G speeds available by the end of the year. Those devices include three Android-based smartphones: the Motorola Atrix 4G, HTC Inspire 4G and Samsung Infuse 4G (which is billed as the thinnest Android smartphone to date). The company also says two 4G-enabled tablets will hit the market in 2011, as well as modems and hotspot devices. There was no explicit mention of a 4G iPhone, but de la Vega did include Apple as a manufacturer that plans to offer 4G devices on AT&T’s network. Whether that means a new iPhone, iPad or some unforeseen device, that’s good news for AT&T, as recent reports indicate a Verizon iPhone is imminent . That said, the latest indications are that such a device may not yet be 4G capable if and when it hits. Read the full story at Mashable .
