LACONIA, N.H. — Superficially, something’s not right. It’s the snow. There isn’t any. The fields are brown and raw; the mountains have no life to them. Ponds have frozen, and rafts of ice navigate the smaller rivers, but the political placards that are supposed to be stuck in snowbanks are instead planted in dirt or attached to guardrails. A year after they postponed their wedding, Michelle Rhee and Kevin Johnson tied the knot in Tennesse over Labor Day weekend. The Sacramento Bee reports that the former D.C. schools chancellor and the mayor of Sacramento exchanged vows before a small group of family and friends at Blackberry Farm, a resort in the Great Smoky Mountains outside of Knoxville, Tenn. Engaged almost two years , the power couple had originally planned a bigger ceremony at the home of a California developer and supporter of the mayor’s — but changed their minds after it drew a lot of media attention. Yetta Stromberg was 19 years old when she was a counselor at a summer camp for young Communists. It was 1929. The camp was in the mountains near San Bernardino, California. The campers came from working-class Communist families from Los Angeles. The 40 or so boys and girls ranged in age from 6 to 16. The parents paid only $6 a week per camper, as all the adults at the camp, including Stromberg, were volunteers. read more
