Angry about inequality? Don’t blame the rich.

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

There is no doubt that incomes are unequal in the United States — far more so than in most European nations. 2011: A Year of Change

Friday, December 30th, 2011

2011 was an unforgettable year with the rise of the Arab Spring, the Occupy Movements challenging the corporate world and a general overall social consciousness. Architects , too, learned that it is our responsibility to design in such a way to enhance and impact some of the world’s urgent concerns: poverty, climate change, unemployment, energy crises and education. With community’s no longer willing to accept the status quo, as we’ve seen in many parts of the world with successful protests, education is a key component for the mass majority. Education has always been a right and architecture has played a vital role in creating school buildings, which have become a teaching tool for urban sprawl in a poverty setting, have responded to climate change, sustainability, energy crises and preservation of culture and heritage. For example, the Children Academy in Haiti, the Boarding School for Girls in India, the Bamboo School in Liberia and The United Nations Relief and Works Agency Zero Carbon Gas Schools in Gaza Palestine, are all exemplary projects that can be set a new standard for architectural education.

Activists say government tanks began pulling out early Tuesday. The Syrian government has promised the monitors freedom of movement but is also responsible for their security and transport.

Wizards vs. Nets: Washington blows 21-point lead in season opener

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

For the first 17 minutes of the Washington Wizards ’ season debut, the fans at Verizon Center had to wonder if there were dramatically improved players in those impressive new red, white and blue uniforms. Fired up to kick off a season that was delayed by nearly two months, the Wizards provided a clinic on ball movement and defensive tenacity, and took a 21-point lead over the visiting New Jersey Nets. But the excitement and adrenaline provided from a flashy, laser and pinwheel introduction eventually subsided and the positive vibes came crashing down late in the third quarter when Nick Young fell to the floor, grimacing and later had to be carried to the locker room with a jammed left foot.
