‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ and the art of the ambiguous movie ending

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

In “ The Film Snob’s Dictionary ,” writers David Kamp and Lawrence Levi cheekily chart out the differences between Movies and Films (“It’s a Movie if it’s black-and-white because it’s old. It’s a Film if it’s black-and-white because it’s Jarmuschy.”) They might have added another definition: It’s a Movie if it ends. It’s a Film if it stops. ¶The ambiguous ending has long been one of the hallmarks of the classic art-house film, as reliable a convention of independent filmmaking as guns are to Westerns or fireballs are to action spectacles. (Granted, once in a while a mainstream blockbuster will leave audiences hanging: Was Leonardo DiCaprio still dreaming at the end of “ Inception ”?) ¶This year alone, filmgoers have been provoked (or infuriated, depending on their need for closure) by several non-ending endings: In Kelly Reichardt’s “Meek’s Cutoff,” the band of 19th-century settlers whose trek she methodically follows are on the verge of deciding which path to take just as the movie ends. In “Take Shelter,” Jeff Nichols’s insinuatingly creepy Read full article > >

Sarah Palin sits out 2012. There is a God.

Friday, October 7th, 2011

U ndoubtedly many Americans, not least among them television producers, are disappointed by Sarah Palin’s decision not to run for president . On the bright side, Palin has proved (finally) that there is a God. How so? For the past three years, since she rocketed from relative obscurity to political diva, Palin has hinted that she might run for the highest office but would rely on God’s guidance. This template is not unique to Palin. Millions pray to a higher order to discover the right path. I recently watched a few minutes of “Eat, Pray, Love” before succumbing to an ennui-induced coma; in the movie, Julia Roberts tearfully implores God, to whom she admits not having spoken on a regular basis, to tell her what to do: Dump her boring husband and follow her appetite for pasta and spiritual enlightenment through casual sex? Or . . . Read full article > >

‘Arrested Development’ will return, with new episodes and the movie

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

The Bluth family is back. In what can only be described in Tobias Funke-esque terms as “ joyous news ,” Mitch Hurwitz, creator of “ Arrested Development ,” announced Sunday that new episodes of the beloved Fox series will be made, along with a long-buzzed-about movie. The New York Times reports that Hurtwitz — who was joined by all the members of the cast at an “Arrested Development” reunion, held Sunday during the New Yorker Festival — plans to make nine or 10 new episodes. Those episodes will be shot next summer, to be followed by production of the film. The studio backing the project has not yet been identified, nor is it clear which network will broadcast those episodes, which will serve as a prelude to the story told in the movie. Release dates for the episodes and the motion picture also have not been specified. Read full article > >

As true-crime tale and political portrait, ‘Incendiary’ honors facts

Friday, September 30th, 2011

“ Incendiary: The Willingham Case ” may be the “ Moneyball ” of political documentaries. Granted, this movie doesn’t star Brad Pitt as a scrappy baseball manager who leads a ragtag team of players to a historic winning streak. But “Incendiary” — a riveting true-crime documentary from the Austin-based filmmaking team of Steve Mims and Joe Bailey, Jr. — delivers just as timely and meaningful a message about the importance of honoring empirical facts over gut feelings and irrational biases. For Billy Beane, Winning Isn’t Everything

If there’s ever a sequel to the movie, it probably won’t have anything to do with baseball.

Working mom movie-fest: Ditching the husbands and kids for a chick flick

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011

I don’t know how we did it. When my editor suggested I get a bunch of working moms together to see the movie version of “I Don’t Know How She Does It, ” it seemed laugh-out-loud impossible. I cast a wide net, figuring that, given all the sports practices, crash deadlines and general familial mayhem, there would be no way to get more than one mom to chuck it all on a Friday night to see a chick flick. TV: A bromantic sunset for ‘Entourage’ on Sunday

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

There was a moment recently in this final, eighth-season lap of HBO’s “Entourage” that in the subtlest way signaled the true end of the show: Under the harsh fluorescent lights of a clinic to which he’d been summoned by his parole officer for a drug test, the movie star Vincent Chase (played by 35-year-old Adrian Grenier) started to look a little too old for the part. 5 myths about Rick Perry

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

You’re probably thinking, “I’ve seen this movie before: West Texas boy makes middling grades in college, gets elected governor and — to the consternation of gobsmacked Democrats, who misunderestimate his folksy appeal — runs for the Republican nomination for president.” But if that’s all you know about Rick Perry, you’re probably one of those pundit-savants who’s asking whether the country is ready for another White House occupant from the Lone Star State. The fact is, the most recent entrant into the GOP race is nothing like the caricatures being promoted on the left and the right. Here are some myths that need debunking, and quick. MTV Movie Awards: Fashion superlatives

Monday, June 6th, 2011

The MTV Movie Awards does not function as a couture fashion show in the same way other trophy ceremonies do . At this decidedly less serious event, the skirts are shorter, the attitude is looser and the overall vibe is much less formal. Still, the celebs do walk a red carpet. And when photographs are taken on a red carpet, fashion assessments must be made. With that in mind, here are some of the fashion superlatives from this year’s MTV Movie Awards, as determined by me, someone who came to work today wearing a button-down over an E.T. T-shirt. So, you know, clearly an expert. Read full article > >
