Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence and more reasons to watch the MTV Video Music Awards

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

The MTV Video Music Awards , which air tonight at 9 p.m. ET, admittedly can be a ridiculous affair that often focuses more on “controversial moments” than musical talent. But if you’re the kind of person who feels compelled to keep up on pop cultural current events — and if you read this blog, you must be — then you’ll probably be watching tonight. So what will people be tweeting and talking about during and after the ceremony? As always, some of the things that happen at the VMAs will be completely unpredictable. (Or at least orchestrated, but seemingly unpredictable to the average viewer.) But, in addition to Selena Gomez’s hosting gig during the pre-show, here are five pre-announced VMA spectacles that will likely capture some attention. Read full article > >

The MTV Video Music Awards: A history of its tastelessness

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The MTV Video Music Awards — to be broadcast live Sunday night from Los Angeles, presumably with the usual array of scantily clad celebrities, intentionally controversial moments and, oh yeah, awards for music videos — has been an annual occasion for 27 years. And as those years continue to slide by, taking us further from the network’s target demographic, the antics at the VMAs seem to grow increasingly tasteless. But is that actually true, or is this just what happens when we grow older and less charmed by the sight of celebrities gratuitously making out onstage to generate buzz? Read full article > >

Comedian Tom Green, MTV’s original court jester, is now a real stand-up guy

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Ten years ago, Tom Green’s lightly bearded visage was about as ubiquitous as his sense of humor was bizarre. During the early 2000s, the Canadian comic catapulted to stardom after his cable-access program, “The Tom Green Show,” moved to MTV. It was weird stuff. Green got his yuks with a distinctive blend of sketch comedy and surrealist candid-camera stunts. Among his best gags: painting a pornographic scene on the hood of his parents’ car. They were not amused. But everybody else was. Read full article > >

The MTV Movie Awards: What to expect

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

The MTV Movie Awards show is not exactly the Oscars. In terms of classiness, it’s not even the Golden Globes or the People’s Choic Awards. The annual, decidedly silly ceremony — which airs live tonight at 9 ET on MTV — involves handing out popcorn bucket trophies in such illustrious categories as Best Scared-as-[Expletive] Performance and, more importantly, relentlessly promoting movies coming to a multiplex near you. It also specializes in delivering unexpected and decidedly crude TV moments carefully designed to keep MTV in the pop culturally relevant category. (Please see Sacha Baron Cohen sticking his posterior into Eminem’s face a couple of years ago. Or don’t, since it’s probably taken two years to erase that image from your brain.) More Thoughts on Michael Shannon Playing General Zod in ‘Man of Steel’

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

The other day it was announced that Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire, Take Shelter) had been cast as General Zod in Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel. Fans everywhere have had plenty to say about not only Shannon’s casting, but also whether it was a smart idea to use Zod as the villain after the character was featured previously in Superman II. The superhero has a long list of new villains to square off against, so why do they keep going back to the same ones? Should this be a concern, or are fans just trying to find something (anything!) to gripe about. I sat down for a quick video chat with MTV Splashpage to discuss these topics and more. Is this Superman movie on the right track with the right cast? Or is it heading for the disaster zone? Check out the… Read More Read Comments
