Wizards Coach Flip Saunders hoping for a playoff run

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

His roster remains one of the youngest in the league, and he is about to lead a team through a truncated season for the second time in his NBA career, but Washington Wizards Coach Flip Saunders is entering his third season with the franchise with more stability and continuity than ever before. Saunders is not trying to teach a new system to a group of obstinate veterans, as he did in his first year. He’s not trying to lead the first year of rebuilding effort around John Wall , while also placating the former face of the franchise, Gilbert Arenas , as he did in his second year. The NBA resumed lawsuit settlement talks on Friday at noon with the hopes of resolving the nearly five-month labor dispute in time to start a 66-game season by Christmas. NBA players file two antitrust suits against league; David Stern calls decision ‘a sham’

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

The NBA ’s more than four-month long labor dispute effectively moved from debates in plush hotels to arguments in a courthouse when the players’ union disbanded in an effort to file an antitrust lawsuit against the NBA. And on Tuesday, players hit the league with separate antitrust complaints in Minnesota and the Northern District of California in an effort to prove that the lockout is illegal. NBA lockout: David Stern cancels games through November, says ‘there will not be a full NBA season’

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

NEW YORK — The NBA has a better chance of playing no games this season than it does to play 82 games. Players, owners eager to end the lockout in the next few days; talks resume Friday

Friday, October 28th, 2011

NEW YORK — NBA owners and players called it an early night Thursday, with both pointing toward Friday as a decisive day for big moves to end the 119-day lockout. Or not. After two days of talks about the salary cap system, they will turn their attention back to the division of revenues, which derailed the negotiations last week. Read full article > >

NBA lockout: Negotiations could be hijacked by racial perceptions

Friday, October 21st, 2011

The owners “lied to you,” Derek Fisher said, moments after the players union president walked out of fruitless labor talks in Manhattan on Thursday night . And with that the mutual distrust and name-calling began anew. Now the NBA is again facing the prospect of a bye year . Soon, it won’t be about money. Soon, the Rev. Jesse Jackson worries, it will be personal and irreconcilable and no longer about the color green. Read full article > >

Alexandra Petri: About that Sarah Palin and Glen Rice one-night stand

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

I don’t believe the In 1987 Sarah Palin Had A One-Night Stand With NBA Star-to-Be Glen Rice story that the National Enquirer and the new Palin book by Joe McGinniss are promoting. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the past three years, it’s that Sarah Palin Doesn’t Like Rice. (If you want more jokes, especially jokes that have Mann Act attitudes towards what the Enquirer called a “ steamy, interracial hookup ,” just go on Twitter, where they will oblige you in sickening spades.) 2011 NBA draft: Wizards will have to wait and see with the sixth pick

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

NEW YORK — They could go with the mop-haired, trash-talking forward who left his homeland of Czech Republic four years ago to play in a basketball-crazed nation and beamed with pride as fans serenaded him after his last game for his team. Or they could go with shy big man from Lithuania who remains unsure about whether he will even play in the NBA next season as his agent attempts to negotiate a buyout agreement with his current team. They could go with the confident forward from Turkey who is good friends with John Wall and spent an entire year as a practice player at Kentucky. Or they could go with the long-armed forward with the big hands from San Diego State. If all else fails, they could take the center from Texas who hopes to be in the analysts’ booth when his playing career is over. Read full article > >

LeBron James left Ohio. So does everyone else.

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

MIAMI My home town of Akron, Ohio, is known for being the former “Rubber Capital of the World.” In basketball circles, though, it will forever be best known as the home town of LeBron James — the NBA superstar who kicked off a national controversy last summer when he left the Cleveland Cavaliers to play here for the Miami Heat. The Heat are now tied 1-1 in the NBA Finals, meaning that James is within striking distance of a championship. That was a goal that eluded him for seven seasons in Cleveland, despite the team’s great chances, high hopes and the city’s adoration for its homegrown star. Read full article > >
