You’ve made it this far — through security at the overseas airport, the whimpering baby in Seat 22E, the neighbor’s seat back in your lap — and you have just one more hurdle to clear: the U.S. Customs Declaration form. The double-sided slip of paper is basically all that stands between you and home, your dog and the pile of unopened mail. Sharpen your pencil, and your responses. Read full article > >

Emmanuel Dugger was on his way home from a cigar run in Northeast Washington just before midnight Sunday when he spotted something on his neighbor’s stoop that stopped him cold. It was a small object wrapped in a brown-and-red-striped towel. Read full article > >

A Fairfax County woman has been found not guilty of violating the pooper scooper law. After a several-hour trial, a jury cleared Kimberly Zakrzewski of allegations that she left behind Baxter’s business . The case began one morning in April when Virginia Cornell said she saw her neighbor, Zakrzewski, leave behind a mess left by Baxter, a fluffy, 19-pound Westie-bichon frise mix. Read full article > >

We should have known to have an extra box of AA batteries for the flashlights. We should have known to fill the bathtub with water for drinking and flushing. We should have known to bring in the patio umbrella before the winds arrived. All day Friday I have watched the precise movements of Hurricane Irene on the Internet and on television. Sophisticated graphics and brilliantly colored radar whorls are measuring the second-by-second advance of its wind and rain on the coastline. And though I observe thoughtful and careful advance work, safety precautions and evacuations — real signs of emergency preparedness — I have to think that there will, in the aftermath, also be notable cluelessness. Oh: A power company is supposed to have a system to monitor electrical outages and to field calls from customers? Or, for my own part: Why didn’t I think to collapse that innocent-looking canvas deck chair before the wind took it and sailed it like a Frisbee into the neighbor’s window? Read full article > >

Don’t lie. We know that a lot of people are doing it; you’re not alone. According to a recent national survey, 32 percent of people admitted that they have “borrowed” their neighbor’s unencrypted Wi-Fi connection at some point. Only 18 percent admitted the same in a similar poll taken in 2008. “The reality is that many consumers have not taken the steps to protect themselves,” said Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director at the Wi-Fi Alliance, a non-profit trade group that commissioned the surveys. Sharing an open Wi-Fi hookup might seem neighborly. But a nosy neighbor could use eavesdropping software to monitor your online haunts. A free, easy-to-use eavesdropping tool called Firesheep has been downloaded more than 1 million times since last year. “With Firesheep, almost anyone can effectively hack into your Facebook, Twitter and other accounts,” says Randy Abrams, director of technical education at anti-virus firm ESET. “Almost anyone has the skill to use Firesheep to be a nosy neighbor.” You can repel moochers and snoopers by taking a few simple steps while configuring your wireless network. “But much like the seat belts in your car, you won’t get protected unless you use it,” Davis-Felner says. Muddled perceptions about Wi-Fi security persist. “People who don’t understand the technology simply have faith,” says Chet Wisniewski, senior security adviser at network security firm Sophos. The widespread, seemingly innocuous use of public Wi-Fi hot spots doesn’t help as it tends to convey a false sense of security, he says. Read the full story at ABC News .
