[Ned Martel is filling in for Lisa de Moraes, who will be back blogging next week.] “The X Factor” is down to a dozen and the show has gained momentum, merging methods of “American Idol” and “The Voice” and adding elements of mentoring plus back-up theatrics. It’s less bubblegum but not less contrived, nor less captivating. And Simon sang his own praises as he saluted the network for already guaranteeing his new project a second season, even as this first one is hitting its stride. Read full article > >

In an effort to gin up a bigger audience, the Oprah Winfrey Network announced Tuesday that it would expand its 8 p.m. “Oprah’s Lifeclass” to two hours on Fridays. “Oprah’s Lifeclass” (airing 8 to 9 p.m., after Rosie O’Donnell’s talk show) will continue to be what OWN describes as Oprah’s most personal revelations, new insights and life lessons gleaned from the 25-year history of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” — or, as we like to call the new show, “a clever ‘Oprah’ clip job.” Read full article > >

Users and privacy advocates have reservations about Facebook’s planned redesign , the way the change will affect third-party apps and the network’s general approach to privacy. Third-party apps will be fully integrated into a user’s profile page, with updates about activity on each app. That means that users won’t actively click to share updates from apps — the apps will add that information to a user’s page automatically. The name Bobby Flay isn’t exactly synonymous with healthful eating. The Food Network star/restaurateur/celebrity chef is better known for his big juicy burgers than for figure-friendly meals. And you won’t find calorie counts on the menu at his growing chain, Bobby’s Burger Palace . But Flay himself has slimmed down over the past year or so, losing, by his estimate, 10 or 15 pounds. He didn’t do it by joining Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers , a la other celebrities. He whittled his waist by making a surprisingly few, surprisingly simple lifestyle changes. At 5 foot 11 inches, Flay weighs 172 pounds. Read full article > >

With the Defense Department preparing to end its “don’t ask, don’ t tell” policy next Tuesday, gay rights groups are advising the rank and file about what can be done to mark the milestone. Activists say troops on some U.S. military facilities are expected to host parties marking the formal end of the ban on gay men and lesbians openly serving in uniform. The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network , a legal group representing service members affected by the ban, said troops should be able to attend such events. Read full article > >
