Obama challenges Republicans to explain opposition to jobs bill

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

President Obama urged U.S. senators Thursday to pass his jobs bill and warned Republicans who oppose the measure that they will have to explain their opposition “to me, and more importantly, to their constituencies” at a time of mounting economic uncertainty. During a late-morning news conference , Obama emphasized the support that elements of his $447 billion job-creating proposal have received from both parties in the past. But he also issued an explicit warning to senators, particularly in the Republican Party, that he would make any “no” vote a political issue in the emerging 2012 campaign. Obama also said he was comfortable with a proposal by Senate Democrats to help fund the package through a surcharge on income above $1 million — a provision unlikely to pass. Read full article > >

Jennifer Rubin: Chris Christie says he’s not running

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

In a news conference, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told the country once and for all he’s not running. The announcement comes as a blow to donors, supporters and fellow pols who had pleaded with him to enter the race in the wake of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s stumbles. The decision will not endear him to party insiders and donors who fervently believed that this was his moment to run for the White House, and that his unique blend of plain-spoken rhetoric and commitment to systemic reform was just what his party and country requires. But those disappointed or even a little angry about the slow tease routine should remember that no matter how enthusiastic a pol’s supporters may be, they can’t force him to run. Many in Northern Virginia’s sizable Vietnamese community were shocked last month when the popular Eden Center shopping mall in Falls Church was swarmed by the regional gang task force and 19 people were arrested on misdemeanor charges, mostly illegal gambling. But it got more tense the next day, when the task force held a news conference to declare that Eden Center was paralyzed by gang activity, particularly by the “Dragon Family,” and that shootings, stabbings and extortion were prevalent. At least one television report led with an image of the South Vietnamese flag above the headline “Criminal Gang Activity,” which outraged those who see the flag as a sacred symbol of their lost homeland. Canada opposition leader Jack Layton dies after second cancer battle

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

TORONTO — Jack Layton, a folksy and charismatic political leader who guided his party to become the dominant opposition group in Canada’s Parliament while battling severe health problems, died Monday of cancer. He was 61. Layton hobbled through the campaign earlier this year as he recovered from a broken hip and prostate cancer. Under his upbeat leadership the leftist New Democrats outpolled the Liberals and became the official opposition party for the first time in their 50-year history. The New Democrat party issued a statement saying Layton died peacefully Monday morning at his Toronto home, surrounded by family and loved ones. Only weeks ago, a gaunt Layton shocked Canadians when he held a news conference to announce he was fighting a second bout of cancer. Read full article > >
