Randy Wittman didn’t get any sleep the night before he made his debut as the 23rd coach in Washington Wizards franchise history. JaVale McGee ‘is not a knucklehead;’ just ask his mom

Friday, January 20th, 2012

This is the night the hammer comes down, you’ve decided. This is the night to call out the brain lock and the boneheadedness — everything embodied by their starting center’s inability to understand that you don’t throw down a showboat dunk when you’re down six points and about to be 1-12 on the season. Orion Weiss at Terrace Theater

Monday, January 9th, 2012

When you’re named after one of the biggest constellations in the night sky, the pressure is on to display a little star power — and the young pianist Orion Weiss did exactly that in a high-powered and often ferocious recital Saturday afternoon at the Terrace Theater. Weiss has been racking up an impressive string of triumphs lately (he filled in at the last minute for an ailing Leon Fleischer last summer, turning in a raved-about performance with the Boston Symphony), and Saturday’s recital showed why. Just 30, the pianist has an exceptionally clean technique with virtuosity to spare. And although Saturday’s program — which revolved around a selection of demanding toccatas — sometimes fell a little flat emotionally, it showed Weiss to be a gifted musician well worth keeping an eye on. Friday, December 23rd, 2011

SEATTLE — The release of Nike’s new Air Jordan basketball shoes caused a frenzy at stores across the nation Friday as scuffles broke out and police were brought in to stamp out unrest that nearly turned into riots in some places. Shoppers stood in long lines through the night to get their hands on a retro version of one of the most popular models of Air Jordans ever made. The fights were reminiscent of violence that broke out in the early 1990s on streets across America as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. Read full article > >

Lady Gaga’s ‘Marry the Night’ video debuts

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

The video for Lady Gaga ’s “Marry the Night” has hit the Web. The 13-minute epic opens on Mama Monster in some sort of hospital, bruised up and declaring, “I’m gonna be star. You know why? (Pause for dramatic crying.) Because I have nothing to lose.” Cut to Gaga as a ballerina, then as a French speaker in a flat getting a call from a “director” who delivers some unspecified bad news. The singer loses her mind — in an artsy way — tearing the apartment apart, covering her naked (but censored) body in cereal and dying her hair in the bathtub. Read full article > >
