With his victories in Maryland, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia, Mitt Romney now looks unbeatable. He has more than half the delegates necessary to clinch the nomination. Republicans are signaling boredom with the contest, and it's becoming harder and harder to justify Rick Santorum's ongoing insurgency.

Don Berwick spent 18 months as the administrator of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, making him the point man for the Obama administration’s implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He began in the post in July 2010 and resigned last November, in the face of Republican pledges to block his nomination in the Senate. Republican legislators seized on remarks he made praising Britain’s National Health Service as an “example” for the United States to follow. Many accused him of supporting the “rationing” of services, a claim Berwick has rejected. Read full article > >

The longer the campaign season goes on, the more dissatisfied Republican voters seem to be with their choice in candidates. So it’s no surprise that, even this late in the race, there remains plenty of buzz that someone perfect might still jump in — to win the nomination outright in the remaining primaries, or to build up enough steam to seize it in a contested GOP convention in Tampa. DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Republican presidential candidates opened an intensive week of campaigning in wide-open Iowa Tuesday with the embattled Newt Gingrich casting rival Mitt Romney as an establishment defender of big government and accusing Romney’s supporters of lying about his record. Gingrich, who has fallen after holding the lead a month ago, went to work trying to limit the damage done by the millions of dollars’ worth of negative ads aimed at him in recent weeks and counter the growing impression that Romney is suddenly well-positioned to win in Iowa and consolidate a grip on the nomination.
