Bullets found on White House grounds as search for Oscar Ramiro Ortega continues

The search for the man suspected of firing shots in Northwest Washington last week has intensified after bullets were found on White House grounds Tuesday, the Secret Service said. According to the Associated Press, a bullet hit an exterior window of the White House and was stopped by ballistic glass. An additional round of ammunition was found outside the White House. DETROIT — As Northwest Airlines Flight 253 approached U.S. airspace on Christmas Day 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the passenger in window seat 19A, began his final preparations for death, a federal prosecutor said at the opening of the Nigerian defendant’s terrorism trial here Tuesday. Abdulmutallab, now 24, went to the bathroom, where he purified himself with water, brushed his teeth and applied perfume to his body, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Tukel said in his opening statement before a jury of nine women and three men. Sassafras has her own documentary, “The Search for Sassafras.” Sassafras has her own Web site, with her own set of Frequently Asked Questions (“Is it really Sassafras?”). Sassafras’s picture is prominently placed on about 6,000 fliers that have been distributed everywhere from Chevy Chase to Columbia Heights. Sassafras is a beagle. She has been missing since April , when she got loose from a dog walker near the National Zoo. Two military medical icons become one

Two of the nation’s flagship military hospitals will be combined into one on Saturday, the culmination of a costly and controversial decision six years ago to close Walter Reed Army Medical Center and expand the Bethesda National Naval Medical Center. A parade of ambulances is scheduled to carry the last 30 patients from Walter Reed the seven miles to Bethesda on Saturday morning, effectively closing the historic Army hospital in Northwest Washington. The move, initially planned for Sunday, has been accelerated by one day in the hopes of beating Hurricane Irene. Read full article > >

All but six of the Prince George’s County schools that were shut after this week’s earthquake are expected to reopen Friday, returning some normalcy to a chaotic first week of school in which more than 20,000 children missed two days of instruction . On Thursday, structural engineers and school officials cleared 26 schools that had been closed for a second day. “We are exercising an abundance of caution,” said Prince George’s Superintendent William R. Hite Jr. In the District, where the school year also began Monday, only the School Without Walls in Northwest remained closed Thursday. Officials hope to reopen it Monday. Read full article > >

A 55-year-old man who was fatally shot by D.C. police Tuesday after an hours-long standoff at his Northwest Washington home had a history of erratic behavior, his neighbors said. Jean E. Louis, who lived in the 1600 block of Irving Street, allegedly stabbed an officer in the arm with a sharpened screwdriver about 1:30 p.m. and then barricaded himself in his Mount Pleasant apartment as police tried to persuade him to surrender. Louis, a Haitian immigrant whose occasional ranting unnerved some neighbors, was shot to death about 5:30 p.m. by officers who said Louis lunged at them with screwdrivers as they tried to enter the apartment to arrest him. Prince William and Kate to visit 8 towns and cities on tour of Canada and the US

LONDON — Prince William and his bride will travel thousands of miles (kilometers) from Canada’s north to Southern California on their first official overseas trip, royal officials said Monday. William and the former Kate Middleton will visit several cities in Canada from June 30 to July 8, taking in the country’s north, south, east and west. It will be their first overseas trip as a married couple. Palace officials said the couple will visit Canada’s capital, Ottawa and the surrounding region; Montreal and Quebec City in the francophone province of Quebec; Charlottetown and Summerside on Prince Edward Island; the Northwest Territories capital of Yellowknife and the oil boom town of Calgary, Alberta.
