Just about the time we crossed into the no-entry zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, the dosimeter clipped to our car window introduced its soundtrack: Chirp-chirp. Chirp-chirp. Chirp-chirp. The dosimeter was blue, about the size of a pager, and it updated its readings of the airborne radiation levels every 30 seconds. Any reading over 2.50 microsieverts (uSv) per hour triggered the chirp. It was 9:30 a.m. when we entered the no-go zone , flashing a permit to five policemen at a checkpoint, and for the next six hours, the chirping never stopped. Read full article > >

ROCKVILLE, Md. — Federal officials say a 5.8-magnitude earthquake in the eastern U.S. caused the ground to shake more than a Virginia nuclear plant was designed to withstand. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey shows the Aug. 23 earthquake caused peak ground movement of about 0.26 g, which is a unit of gravity that measures the impact of shaking on buildings. The North Anna nuclear plant was designed to withstand ground movement ranging from 0.12 g to 0.18 g. Read full article > >

TOKYO — Japan’s northeastern coast was hit Friday by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake, triggering a brief tsunami advisory for waves of up to 20 inches. The earthquake, which struck at 2:36 p.m. local time, was centered 70 miles off the coast of Fukushima and 175 northeast of Tokyo. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and the Tokyo Electric Power Co. said that its disaster-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant was experiencing no further problems. The tsunami advisory was issued for both Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures, two of the areas hardest hit by the March 11 9.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami. Read full article > >
