PITTSBURGH — Thursday afternoon, before batting practice, Davey Johnson gathered the Washington Nationals in their clubhouse at PNC Park. The manager told his players he remained behind them , that he trusted them to pull out of their offensive tailspin and a three-game losing streak. Johnson wanted to ease their minds, and he had chosen a surefire moment for building confidence. In a few hours, he would send Stephen Strasburg to the mound. Read full article > >

As players boarded a chartered flight that would return the Redskins to the Washington area following one of their worst losses in recent memory, Kyle Shanahan had no doubt a lot of work lay ahead. “I know it starts with me,” the offensive coordinator would later say. He had never been shut out before as a football coach. Neither had his father, Coach Mike Shanahan. Read full article > >

SIRTE, Libya — Libyan revolutionary forces claimed to have captured parts of a sprawling convention center that loyalists of Moammar Gadhafi have used as their main base in the ousted leader’s hometown and were shelling the city to try to rout snipers from rooftops in their offensive aimed at crushing this key bastion of the old regime. The Washington Redskins improved to 2-0 on the season on Sunday with a 22-21 victory over the Arizona Cardinals that came despite their offensive struggles on third down and in the red zone. With some late-game heroics by their defense and place kicker Graham Gano , the Redskins scored nine points in the final 10 minutes to pull off the victory in front of a FedEx Field crowd announced at 76,330. I t’s two weeks into Redskins training camp and in the competitive furor over Rex vs. Becks one salient point has fallen through the cracks: Because neither guy is headed to Canton any time soon, what might matter more than who starts at quarterback is who is in front of Rex Grossman and John Beck . What matters is whether or not the offensive line is pushed aside like rag dolls by defensive ogres such as Pittsburgh’s James Harrison , who is coming to town Friday night to lay a lick on someone behind center. The freshman representative stood in front of a throng of puzzled-looking Republican congressmen. Their leader, John Boehner , had surprised the newcomer moments earlier by asking him to address a 2009 party retreat on how he had knocked off a Republican congressman in a primary . The freshman, a hard-charging Utah conservative named Jason Chaffetz , looked out at his new colleagues and said the first thing that came to his mind. “I am your worst nightmare.” He might as well have been speaking to the leader himself. Boehner already was feeling the heat from relatively young conservatives such as Chaffetz who wanted to push their agenda harder and faster, inspired by a passionate trio of Republican stars known as the Young Guns . Then-Republican Whip Eric Cantor , his deputy whip, Kevin McCarthy , and Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan all had captivated House conservatives with their aggressive messages and tactics. Cantor especially had made a name for himself by arguing that the party should go on the offensive more against House Democrats. Privately, some Republicans said they would vote for Cantor over Boehner in a leadership fight. Now, increasingly, as the Young Guns’ popularity grew, Boehner sought to bring fledgling congressmen like Chaffetz into his fold. Read full article > >

Pakistani Police officials say that a suicide attack on Friday that killed more than 80 paramilitary cadets was most likely retaliation for an army offensive in Pakistan’s tribal areas-not the killing of Osama bin Laden. Though the Pakistani Taliban…

At first, I dismissed the comments. I figured Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan was just doing his misdirection thing again recently when he intimated inexperienced quarterback John Beck could be the team’s starter next season. But then people at Redskins Park informed me otherwise. They reminded me how much the Shanahans, Mike and his offensive coordinator son Kyle, believe in Beck, which was part of the reason the Redskins did not draft a quarterback. They told me that although the team hopes to re-sign Rex Grossman , Beck really is the Shanahans’ first option at the game’s most important position . And unlike last year when they were split on acquiring quarterback Donovan McNabb (Kyle was strongly against it), the Shanahans are united behind Beck, who has started just four NFL regular season games and none since 2007.
