After Fairfax County police acknowledged in late June that they had fired the officer who shot and killed unarmed motorist David Masters in 2009, Chief David M. Rohrer said he would apologize to the Masters family. Eventually, Rohrer called Masters’s father, mother, sister and ex-wife and offered each his apologies. He also arranged to have Masters’s truck towed back to Fredericksburg, where Masters’s ex-wife and stepdaughter, the executors of his estate, live. But Masters’s parents said they were offended that the chief called the victim’s ex-wife first, and only called them in response to an inquiry from Barrie Masters, his father, a month later. The chief then declined to share any information with them about the shooting, Barrie Masters said. Read full article > >

The off-duty federal officer pulled into the gas station and saw one man beating another man, who was lying on the ground, said Lt. Tammy Sparkman, a Prince George’s County police spokeswoman. As the officer went to intervene, Sparkman said, he saw the assailant pull out a handgun. Sparkman said that when the officer identified himself, the armed man “turned toward” him with the gun. The officer then fired his weapon, Sparkman said, shooting and killing the man. Sparkman said the officer was off duty and in plain clothes. Read full article > >

The arrest comes amid rising concern that Pakistan’s military is penetrated by Islamists who are sympathetic to insurgent groups that have declared war on the state. Last month, heavily armed fighters stormed a naval base in Karachi, an attack widely suspected to have required inside help. Read full article > >

An assistant principal at a Fauquier County elementary school was arrested Wednesday and charged with possessing and distributing child pornography, federal prosecutors said.
