Gingrich, who now is near the top in polling on the GOP race, said he didn’t remember exactly how much he was paid, but a former Freddie Mac official said it was at least $1.5 million for consulting contracts stretching from 1999 to 2007. Israel to hold $100 million in taxes owed to Palestinians

JERUSALEM — Israeli Cabinet ministers decided Monday to hold on to about $100  million in taxes owed to the Palestinians, an official said, despite warnings from Israel’s Defense Ministry that the measure could threaten the stability of the Palestinian government in the West Bank. Israel stopped transfer of tax funds as punishment for the Palestinian’s successful bid for admission to UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural agency, which was part of a larger effort to gain admission as a state in the world body. Jobless claims rise for second week

Initial jobless claims rose again to 428,000 from 417,000 for the week ending Sept. 10, the Labor Department reported Thursday, the highest number the country has seen since June. It is “likely” that the SEC got rid of “some documents” from inquiries it decided not to pursue involving Bernard Madoff and such major financial firms as Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Lehman Brothers and SAC Capital , a senior SEC official said Wednesday. But the official, enforcement director Robert Khuzami, said agency officials “do not believe that current or future investigations have been harmed” by the SEC’s long-running practice of purging files of inquiries that were closed without a full-fledged investigation.
