Census Bureau measures more Americans living in poverty

The Census Bureau on Monday released a new, comprehensive poverty measure that painted an even more dismal picture of the nation’s economic landscape than the official measure from two months ago. The report found that 49.1 million Americans — 16 percent of the population — lived in poverty in 2010, which is higher than the 46.2 million Americans found to live in poverty by the official measure released in September . Auditors look into spending at Show Place Arena in Prince George’s County

Auditors in Prince George’s County looking into more than $1 million in spending at the publicly owned Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro said in a draft audit to top officials that they have identified numerous irregularities. The draft audit, examined by The Washington Post, raised questions about the arena’s operations and more than $200,000 in expenditures authorized by its top manager, William Chambers. The first members of the public to see the official opening of Washington’s new $120 million memoria l to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. walked in quietly, smiling but “so slow it was like we were coming to see a body,” said Weldon Ferguson of the District. What they saw instead was stone and water, words and an iconic image on a picture-perfect summer day along the Tidal Basin. Some were weeping.
