Auditors in Prince George’s County looking into more than $1 million in spending at the publicly owned Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro said in a draft audit to top officials that they have identified numerous irregularities. King memorial opens to the public today

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

The first members of the public to see the official opening of Washington’s new $120 million memoria l to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. walked in quietly, smiling but “so slow it was like we were coming to see a body,” said Weldon Ferguson of the District. What they saw instead was stone and water, words and an iconic image on a picture-perfect summer day along the Tidal Basin. Some were weeping. Others were taking pictures of the statue and each other and giving high-fives, lending the unveiling of the memorial the feeling of one big block party. Read full article > >

Wonkbook: Do Republicans need a grand bargain?

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Here’s the Republican Party’s problem: The politicians know they can’t keep pushing the Ryan budget. In fact, some of them are now leaking that they knew they couldn’t push the Ryan budget from the beginning, and said so, loudly, at heated, closed-door meetings . But as Newt Gingrich learned, the base won’t let them abandon it, either. So they’re stuck with a plan they can’t pass, can’t sell, and can’t throw overboard. Jonathan Chait thinks the only answer is to layer a new plan on top of it. “The one way out,” he writes, “is to cut a grand deficit bargain with Obama.” Then the Ryan plan looks like the opening gambit in an ultimately successful bid for deficit reduction and Republicans can supplant it with a more popular proposal even as it remains the official Republican position. A garden helps grow a community

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Amid the small water fountain, the picnic table and the trees, it might not have seemed possible that the space at 13th and C streets SE was just years earlier a parking lot with a dumpster and plagued by drainage problems.
