Don’t Wake Iran Up; It’s the Persian Winter

While eyes are on the Iranian people to storm up in an uprising similar to the Arab Spring, Iran is hibernating in a Persian winter. Yes, it’s true, the sleepy nation talks in its sleep (that is the ongoing protests of the highly educated young Iranians on Facebook, Twitter and blogs) but, there isn’t going to be a Persian Spring any time soon.

Simulation shows deeper meltdown at tsunami-hit Japan nuclear reactor than previously thought

TOKYO — Radioactive debris from melted fuel rods may have seeped deeper into the floor of a Japan’s tsunami-hit nuclear reactor than previously thought, to within a foot from breaching the crucial steel barrier, a new simulation showed Wednesday. The findings will not change the ongoing efforts to stabilize the reactors more than eight months after the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant was disabled, but they harshly depict the meltdowns that occurred and conditions within the reactors, which will be off-limits for years. Three women were jointly awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for their contributions to the ongoing struggle for democracy in Yemen and to peace in Liberia. Yemeni opposition leader Tawakkul Karman, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Liberian activist Leymah Gbowee were hailed as deeply courageous and visionary leaders who have peacefully sparked reform in societies usually dominated by men. Issa probes EPA’s role in limiting vehicles’ emissions

The House Oversight Committee is expanding its probe of the Obama administration’s rules limiting greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks, according to a letter it sent to the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. The investigation led by committee chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) reflects the ongoing battle between House leaders and the administration over the extent to which EPA can address climate change without congressional input. It is not enough, they realized, to spend more on poor children or to promote college-level classes for all if school employees are not fully committed to the cause. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday that Obama will meet with “a broad range of the intelligence community” to thank them for their ongoing work, especially on helping locate the former al Qaeda leader.
