Does military service still matter for the presidency?

Friday, May 25th, 2012

In every presidential election since 1992, the candidate with the less distinguished military résumé has triumphed. Bill Clinton defeated war heroes George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole; National Guard pilot George W. Bush beat Vietnam veterans Al Gore and John Kerry; and Barack Obama was decisively elected over John McCain, who had displayed extraordinary valor during years of captivity as a Navy pilot in North Vietnam. The Iranian view on how to strike a deal

Friday, May 25th, 2012

It’s a classic case of brinkmanship bargaining: Iran and the West, each seeking to squeeze concessions from the other side, have decided to extend their nuclear negotiations to another round starting on June 17, a few weeks before a punishing new round of sanctions takes effect. Editorial Board: The NRC chief is out. Let’s get a new one on the job quickly

Thursday, May 24th, 2012

WHEN GREGORY B. JACZKO began his tenure as the chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2009, the agency was largely invisible to the public, for all the right reasons. Its professional staff was widely recognized as world-class, to the point that analysts held it up as a model for other government energy regulators to emulate, and it was quietly preparing to oversee the first expansion of this nation’s nuclear fleet in decades. The Romney you see is the one you’d get

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

For all of Mitt Romney’s talk of what he would do on Day One in the White House — Bomb Iran? Or was it Planned Parenthood? — there’s just as good a chance he would be tacking up two pictures on the wall. One would be of George H.W. Bush and the other of Jimmy Carter. They both became one-term presidents after they were challenged in the primaries. This is a lesson for Romney. Read full article > >

A choice of capitalisms

Monday, May 21st, 2012

In this election, we’re not having an argument that pits capitalism against socialism. We are trying to decide what kind of capitalism we want. It is a debate as American as Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Jackson and Henry Clay — which is to say that we have always done this. In light of the rise of inequality and the financial mess we just went through, it’s a discussion we very much need to have now. Read full article > >

Is John Edwards a criminal?

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

The prosecution has rested in a case that should never have been brought: the ghastly soap opera better known as the criminal trial of John Edwards . Editorial Board: Bigotry blocks a gay Virginian from the bench

Tuesday, May 15th, 2012

IF ANYTHING, Tracy Thorne-Begland , a top state prosecutor in Richmond with a decade of courtroom experience, is overqualified for a judgeship on the General District Court. Mr. Thorne-Begland, who has prosecuted dozens of homicides and other major felonies, runs one of the biggest commonwealth’s attorney’s offices in Virginia. The caseload of the court to which he was nominated consists mainly of traffic violations, minor crimes and run-of-the-mill civil disputes over contracts and late rent payments. Romney at Liberty: The case for conservatism

Monday, May 14th, 2012

Mitt Romney did not rise on the power of his rhetoric. At the Detroit Economic Club in February, his speech was swallowed by its stadium venue, overshadowed by a gaffe (his wife’s “ couple of Cadillacs ”) and weighed down by leaden language. Early in the primaries, Romney’s attempts to wax poetic on the virtues of America — often by quoting patriotic hymns — were waxen. Read full article > >
