Unsanitary packing probably led to cantaloupe outbreak

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Unsanitary conditions at a cantaloupe packing plant probably contributed to the outbreak that has killed more than two dozen people, including one in Maryland, federal regulators said Wednesday. The Food and Drug Administration determined last month that Jensen Farms in Colorado was the source of the cantaloupes contaminated with Listeria, a dangerous but rare bacterium that thrives in damp and cool conditions. As the illnesses mounted, the incident became the country’s deadliest foodborne outbreak in more than 25 years. AMMAN, Jordan — The failure of U.S. and international efforts to rekindle Middle East peace talks last month has all but doomed chances for a breakthrough in the near future, Jordan’s King Abdullah II said in an interview in which he warned that the failure may cause the outbreak of a new armed uprising in the Palestinian territories. The monarch, a key U.S. ally and the leader of one of only two Arab countries to sign peace treaties with Israel, said the Jewish state’s increasingly conservative political climate has rendered its government incapable of making the kinds of meaningful concessions needed for peace. WHO says E. coli strain responsible for European outbreak is new strain never detected before

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

LONDON — The E. coli bacteria responsible for a mysterious outbreak that has left 18 people dead and sickened hundreds is a new strain that has never been seen before, the World Health Organization said Thursday. Preliminary genetic sequencing suggests the strain is a mutant form of two different E. coli bacteria, with aggressive genes that could explain why the outbreak appears to be so massive and dangerous, the agency said. “This is a unique strain that has never been isolated from patients before,” Hilde Kruse, a food safety expert at WHO, told The Associated Press. The new strain has “various characteristics that make it more virulent and toxin-producing” than the many E. coli strains people naturally carry in their intestines. Read full article > >
