For Mitt Romney, authenticity remains an issue

Sunday, January 8th, 2012

MANCHESTER, N.H. Over the course of this presidential campaign, there has been one consistent reservation many Republican voters — and others — have expressed about GOP front-runner Mitt Romney . They question his authenticity. They don’t know if they can trust him. They wonder who he really is. On Sunday, on a debate stage in Concord, N.H., the former Massachusetts governor may have reinforced those doubts. Twelve hours after skating impressively through another debate with his rivals for the Republican nomination, Romney delivered a far less effective performance. Read full article > >

Tiger Woods struggles to worst round ever at PGA Championship

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

JOHNS CREEK, GA. — When Tiger Woods stuffed his approach shot to within three feet of the pin Thursday morning at Atlanta Athletic Club’s 14th hole, the full brunt of a brutally hot day hadn’t yet settled over the course, and there was no telling what was to come in the first round of the PGA Championship . At that moment, after he rolled in his third birdie in his first five holes, the possibility existed that Woods — absent from contention so often recently — was back. “I was having mechanical thoughts through those holes, and I figured I was 3 under, I can start letting it go now, and just play by instinct and feel,” Woods said. “And [I] just screwed up my whole round. I’m not at that point where I can do that yet.” Read full article > >

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Dan Wheldon ’s experience over the course of 200 grueling laps, and JR Hildebrand ’s lack of it entering the final turn Sunday resulted in a drama-filled finish befitting of the centennial anniversary of the Indianapolis 500. Wheldon snatched the lead — and what appeared to be a certain triumph — from Hildebrand when the 23-year-old rookie wrecked on the front straightaway, about 1,000 feet from the checkered flag. As tens of thousands of fans looked on in stunned disbelief while Hildebrand’s mangled race car slid along the concrete retaining wall, Wheldon crossed the start-finish line at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to earn his second victory in open wheel racing’s marquee event . The visit, an art performance, was meant to test the boundaries of the artist-collector relationship. Testy might be the best word for the mood at Hughes’s 14th Street NW condo over the course of a week. “It has been awkward,” Bolt says. “I didn’t think it through when I agreed to it,” Hughes says.
