DEAR AMY: My husband and I have been invited to the wedding of a dear friend’s son. I have just learned that a man I dated almost 20 years ago will be at the reception. The handful of times I have seen him over the last 20 years have been cordial. The problem is that my husband is jealous of any man I dated before I met him. I have never given him any reason not to trust me (and he says he does trust me), but I know that if this ex of mine attempts to greet me at the reception, things could get ugly. I know my husband’s emotions about this are immature, but it is what it is. Read full article > >

This article written by Steven A. Cook originally appeared on ForeignPolicy.com on August 2, 2011 Read any newspaper, magazine, or journal article about Turkey over the last few decades, and the odds are that the Turkish military establishment was described as “staunchly secular,” “powerful,” “autonomous,” “dominant,” or all of these things. At times, it seemed that observers were in awe of the Turkish commanders, armed as they seemed to be with an uncompromising ideology and a will to act to ensure the security of Turkey’s republican and, importantly, secular political order. The ideals, cohesion, and strength of the armed forces stood in stark contrast with the weakness and corruption — especially during the 1990s — of Turkey’s civilian political leaders.

Weiner’s roast, Palin’s belligerent ignorance, Gingrich’s implosion captivate Washington. Posturing over deficits and playing chicken over lifting the debt limit dominate the economic conversation. The reality facing Americans gets lost in the hubbub. It is as if an impenetrable fog separates Washington’s follies from America’s agonies. In Washington, the economy is said to be in recovery. Restaurants are full; housing prices are going up. Republicans think it’s time to replay old conservative favorites: Curtail aid to the unemployed, roll back financial and health-care reforms, repeal what left’s of the stimulus while pushing to slash spending and taxes. The Obama administration wants to brag on the 2 million jobs created over the last 15 months, despite “bumps in the road.” The Democrats are so cowed by the elite’s focus on deficits that they are afraid to put forth a jobs plan. Outside of the scandal du jour, the city is fixated on how much and what to cut. Read full article > >

Paris-inspired booties and an LED watch from a sixth-generation Berlin shoe brand Known for inventing four-in-one and two-in-one zipper shoes, Munich’s Nat-2 shows a simpler side of shoe design with their new desert boot-inspired line created just for girls. The suede Marais booties, named after the Parisian neighborhood, combine classic French subtlety with a flexible fit. At the helm of Nat-2 is creative director Sebastian Thies , whose extensive know-how is due in part to his family’s storied history as innovative shoemakers. Originally founded by “Ferdinand Fischer” in 1856, the company folded during WWII, but was resurrected by Ingeborg Thies, Sebastian’s grandfather and a Fischer by birth. The company was renamed Thies-Fischer KG in 1949 and now produces several brands alongside Nat-2. In addition to their new streamlined shoe, Nat-2 recently introduced “Time”—a collection of plastic watches that reflect the pared-down aesthetic of the more grown-up streetwear scene. The patented 42 LED scroll system that lights the entire watch face up as each minute passes strikes a balance between the “keep it fresh, keep it classy” style that Sebastian has curated over the last three years. Perfect for the quantum computer nerd, the watch comes in several different colors including olive and purple. The Nat-2 Time and Marais sell from the Nat-2 online shop as well as from retailers around the world.

Much has been aflutter on twitter about the very visible presence of women among the protests that have taken Egypt by storm over the last few weeks, but images of them have remained sparse amid the digital slideshows strung together by major media outlets, portraying mainly dense crowds of the manly. read more

Beijing – China’s economy continued to accelerate in the fourth quarter, as inflation is easing only slightly, showing that a series of cooling measures by Beijing over the last year have had only a limited effect. Data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on Thursday put the pace of growth at 10.3 percent for the full year, up from 9.2 percent in 2009. read more

Over the last five days, as the Verizon iPhone announcement was rumored into reality, Wall Street did not respond enthusiastically. Both AT&T and Verizon shares have fallen more than 5 percent over that time period including substantial falls in trading so far today. What this seems to say is that Wall Street anticipates that the competition between the companies, the subsidies that they have to offer, and the concessions to Apple they will be forced to make may not be great for investors. That’s perfectly Wall Street thinking, but it doesn’t really make sense. Where would AT&T be without the iPhone right now? It’s impossible to predict how many of their customers would have jumped ship without the exclusive deal with Apple to sell the Jesus phone. While I think it’s suggestive, we shouldn’t make too much of the last five days as investors have been thinking about — and pricing in — the possible impact of the Verizon iPhone for months.
