Many U.S. men with low-risk prostate cancer should delay or forgo treatment, panel says

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

More than 100,000 American men who each year undergo “curative” therapy for low-risk prostate cancer should consider delaying treatment until the disease gets worse, and possibly put it off forever, a committee of experts convened by the federal government said Wednesday. The go-slow strategy is “a viable option” because there is no convincing evidence that surgery or radiation therapy increases survival, and there is good evidence that those procedures worsen quality of life, the panel concluded after a three-day meeting at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. Supercommittee appears unlikely to reach agreement

Friday, November 18th, 2011

If the congressional “supercommittee” cannot agree on a plan to tame the federal debt by next week’s deadline, as now appears likely, here’s what will happen: nothing. The automatic spending cuts that were supposed to force the panel to deliver more palatable options would not take effect until January 2013. That leaves lawmakers a full year to devise alternatives. Transportation bill would expand board of Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

A move by Congress may allow members of the board that oversees Reagan National and Dulles International airports to be removed by their appointing bodies and increase the size of the panel, which is supervising the construction of the Metrorail extension to Loudoun County . Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) has pushed for legislation that would expand the board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority from 13 to 17. Under his plan, Virginia would get two new appointments and Maryland and the District would each get one additional member. Read full article > >

Maryland commission recommends athletic department cut eight varsity teams

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The commission charged with tackling the multi-million dollar deficit in University of Maryland athletics recommends that the school drop eight of its 27 varsity teams to remedy the shortfall, according to a report released by the panel Monday evening. The teams targeted for elimination are all three men’s track teams (indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, cross-country); men’s swimming and diving; women’s swimming and diving; men’s tennis; women’s water polo; and aerobics and tumbling (formerly known as competitive cheer). War savings and debt reduction: Take two

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The congressional “supercommittee” is looking to count as budget savings as much as $700 billion that the nation no longer plans to spend on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over the next decade, an accounting gimmick that has drawn fire from both Democrats and Republicans. In deference to that criticism, aides from both parties said the panel would not count war savings toward its primary debt-reduction goal of at least $1.2 trillion. Instead, they are considering using the savings to “pay for” other priorities, such as extending emergency unemployment benefits and a temporary payroll tax cut currently enjoyed by every American worker. ‘Supercommittee’? More like stupor committee.

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

So what’s so super about the “supercommittee” ? The Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction , as the supercommittee is known formally, held a first meeting last week that consisted entirely of speech-making by the panel members. The panel followed that triumph by holding a hearing Tuesday morning devoted in large part to trading blame for the deficit. Read full article > >

Debt supercommittee’s membership dominated by white men

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

With House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) announcement Thursday of her three appointees to the bipartisan debt “supercommittee,” the panel’s 12-member roster is now complete. It represents a broad range of ideological views, from House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (Tex.) on the right to Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) on the left. But the group’s membership is marked by a problem that has plagued Congress — a lack of gender and racial diversity. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) is the only woman on the panel. House Democratic Caucus Vice-Chairman Xavier Becerra (Calif.) is the group’s only Hispanic. And House Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn (S.C.) is the only African American. Senate panel ban seen as double standard

Sunday, December 19th, 2010

Gordon R. England’s appointment to a top Pentagon post in 2006 came at a high price. The Senate committee overseeing his confirmation demanded that he give up lucrative stocks and options he held in companies that do business with the military.
