The first time he ran for president, Mitt Romney chose again and again to confront the suspicions and prejudices held by many in the Republican Party’s evangelical base about his Mormon faith. This time, Romney is focusing relentlessly on the economy and is conspicuous in how rarely he talks about God. He no longer tries to convince evangelical voters that he is as Christian as they are, that Jesus Christ is his personal savior and that he, too, reads the Gideon Bible before bed. In “ Homeland ,” Showtime’s astonishingly good and tightly riveted new drama set amid Washington’s classified war on terrorism, Claire Danes stars as Carrie Mathison, a CIA agent racked with guilt over what she considers her personal failings to recognize clues that might have prevented the Sept. 11 attacks. She’s been trying to make up for it ever since, even though her mentor, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), constantly reminds her that the failure was shared across agencies. Read full article > >

What would you do to improve your shot at the MBA program of your dreams? Start a small business? Or a nonprofit, perhaps? Travel the world to bulk up your personal narrative? Maybe even drop $10,000 on a prep course? If you’re aiming for the Stanford Graduate School of Business, you may well be tempted to do all of the above. “From the classmate who climbed Mount Everest to the one who started a microfinance organization for individual entrepreneurs, these are the people who are your classmates and will ultimately become your friends — for life,” says a prerecorded message from Stefan, a Stanford MBA student from Belgium who keeps you company while you’re on hold with the admissions office. “Single Ladies,” a new VH1 soap opera premiering Monday night, exists in a gold-flecked nightmare version of Atlanta, where life can be winnowed down to the lyrics of assertive pop songs and a series of upscale, urban cliches. It’s all champagne fountains, micro-miniskirts and cuisine served by, as one showoff suitor tells a single lady, “my personal four-star chef.” In this world, when a sister is feeling down (and/or stressed-out about trying to launch her fancy dress boutique of dis- tinc -tion), nothing can cheer her up as much as signing the lease on a new Jaguar. Ever since the first elementary school teacher rolled the first television set into the first classroom to air the first course offering from “educational television,” there’s been the hope and the promise that technology would revolutionize the way teaching and learning would be done. As things turned out, educational television became public television and went off in a different direction. And despite the advent of the personal computer and the Internet, most education today remains much like it’s been for hundreds of years: one teacher, 30 kids, textbooks and a blackboard. DALLAS — George Washington’s compass and an assortment of other personal items, including pieces of his coffin, sold at auction Saturday for more than $167,000. The items passed down through generations of Washington’s family were among hundreds related to the nation’s first president offered for sale by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. They were put up for auction by descendants of Washington’s brother Bushrod. The first president had no direct descendants. Nat Washington, a longtime state senator in Washington who died in 2007, had said in his will that he wanted the items sold. Read full article > >

NEW YORK — Dick Cheney has finished his memoir, according to his daughter, and the book is scheduled to come out on Aug. 30. Liz Cheney said that the former vice president’s manuscript was turned in at the beginning of the month. She said the book, currently being edited, will be “very straightforward,” with “a lot of in-depth analysis of really critically important issues.” Cheney’s memoir, “In My Time: A Personal and Political Memoir,” is being published by Threshold Editions, a conservative imprint of Simon & Schuster run by Republican strategist and former Cheney aide Mary Matalin. The very first note of Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony signals that you’re in for something on a whole new scale. It’s a single note, an A, in the strings, quiet and sustained, evoking the humid tang of sulfur in the air and the pregnant hush before rain. But that single note extends over seven octaves — that is, it’s being played from the lowest to the highest ranges in the orchestra. It’s at once tiny and huge and intensely personal. This is why Mahler, who died 100 years ago this week, remains one of today’s most popular symphonists: It’s this personal quality to his music, the sense that, at bottom, it’s really about you.
