U.S. activist Berenson barred from leaving Peru despite court ruling

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

LIMA, Peru — Peru’s government abused its authority by barring paroled U.S. activist Lori Berenson and her 31-month-old son from leaving the country to spend the holidays in New York City with her family, her lawyer charged Saturday. “Administratively, you can’t block a court order,” Anibal Apari said after Berenson told The Associated Press that she and her son Salvador were prevented from boarding a flight Friday night despite being granted permission in court. Parents help their kids speak fluent Spanish and maintain their heritage

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

The nannies’ most important credentials include speaking no English, only Spanish. The elementary schools are bilingual, or full immersion. Summer vacations unfold in, say, Colombia or Peru. The “¡Vamonos! Let’s Go!” CDs with Dora and Diego have been played so many times that finally they must be summarily disappeared for the sake of everyone’s sanity. The magnificent churches of Peru’s Colca Valley

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

The colonial square in Tuti was empty, and the church I’d hoped to visit was locked. It was the four-day Festival of the Cross in May — not, apparently, the most pious of holidays — and everyone was drinking at an arena on the edge of town. I went along.
