As the Washington Wizards were introduced at Verizon Center on Saturday, John Wall already had the look of a defeated man. He slouched over in his chair, slapped five with his fellow starters, then trudged through a tunnel of teammates as his name was announced. The game hadn’t started, but his detachment was already palpable. Read full article > >

PHILADELPHIA — If the Washington Wizards’ final preseason game is indicative of what the upcoming season will resemble, then there will be glimpses of solid play clouded by confounding lapses to make every night a struggle of some sort. JaVale McGee cut to the basket, caught a pass from John Wall, dunked over Philadelphia 76ers reserve Nikola Vucevic and gave him an angry stare-down one minute; Wall missed a breakaway left-handed dunk another. The defense forced a three-second violation and Andray Blatche got a standing ovation from his teammates for drawing a charge, but moments later Washington gave up back-to-back wide-open three-pointers. The trip from Philadelphia to Pullman, Wash., requires two plane changes and more than 12 hours of travel time. John Wooten, the former vice president of player personnel for the Philadelphia Eagles, made the cross-country trip in 1997 to see Ryan Leaf take part in a scheduled workout at Washington State University. Back then, scouts were debating whether Leaf or another top-rated college quarterback, Peyton Manning , should be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Read full article > >

PHILADELPHIA — An appeals court has overturned the attempted prostitution conviction of a Philadelphia woman who was accused of offering sexual favors for World Series tickets. John Wall and Andray Blatche trapped Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner in the corner at one point in the Washington Wizards ’ preseason opener Friday night, frantically waving their arms and bouncing around until Wall eventually corralled the ball. Wall took off on a full sprint, split two defenders, then spotted JaVale McGee out ahead. He tossed an underhand pass at an impossible angle that even the ultra-athletic McGee could not catch. McGee slapped at the ball and it hit off the backboard for a turnover. Read full article > >

PHILADELPHIA — Former FBI director Louis Freeh, tapped to lead Penn State’s investigation into the child sex-abuse allegations against a former assistant football coach, said his inquiry will go as far back as 1975, a much longer period than a grand jury report issued earlier this month. Freeh was named Monday to oversee the university board of trustees’ internal investigation into the abuse allegations that ultimately led to the ouster of longtime football coach Joe Paterno and university President Graham Spanier.
