PITTSBURGH — Sidney Crosby is still recovering from a concussion, Evgeni Malkin has missed the past two games with a suspected leg injury and Brooks Orpik has not returned from offseason abdominal surgery. For most teams, losing their top two centers, plus their best defensive defenseman, would be disastrous. For the Pittsburgh Penguins , it’s merely an inconvenience — and one more reason to savor the view from atop the NHL standings . Read full article > >

PITTSBURGH — Flash floods submerged more than a dozen vehicles in Pittsburgh, killing three people, leaving another missing and presumed dead, and forcing others to swim to safety or scramble onto the roofs of their cars. The flooding occurred after a pair of storms pounded the city on Friday, overwhelming the drainage system and causing manhole covers to pop off the road, officials said. Water rose up to 9 feet in some places along Washington Boulevard, a main road that parallels the Allegheny River in the city’s Highland Park section. Read full article > >

Redskins quarterback John Beck , who will start Friday night against the Indianapolis Colts in the team’s second preseason game, says that while he had to watch rival Rex Grossman put on a strong performance last week, he doesn’t feel added pressure to do the same. “I’m just excited to play,” said Beck, who was sidelined for all of last week with a groin injury and missed the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It would’ve been good to get out and have that good week of practice leading up to the game and play in the game, but I wasn’t able to. So, for me, this is my first opportunity to go out and play in the game, and that’s what I’m looking for.” Read full article > >

The Washington Redskins returned to the practice field on Sunday — two days after they opened the preseason with a 16-7 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers — and back in action was quarterback John Beck . Sidelined for Friday’s game because of a strained groin, Beck is battling Rex Grossman for the Redskins’ starting quarterback job and has ground to make up following the nine-year veteran’s strong performance against Pittsburgh. Grossman completed 19 of 26 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown while directing first-half drives of 88, 82 and 55 yards. Read full article > >

The Washington Redskins ’ quarterback situation might be the butt of jokes on ESPN, sports talk radio and football Web sites, but at least two people — both named Shanahan — believe Rex Grossman and John Beck are capable of starting in the NFL. While it’s not clear if anyone else does, the first bits of hard evidence should be on display Friday night when the Redskins open the preseason against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FedEx Field. Grossman is expected to see the bulk of the action with the first-team unit, as Beck continues to heal from a groin injury he suffered last Saturday in practice. Coaches said Beck won’t take any snaps unless he’s 100 percent healthy. Read full article > >

Nothing matters less to me than the views of Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall. No time should be wasted contemplating most of Mendenhall’s ill-advised comments Monday on Twitter questioning Osama bin Laden’s guilt in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, whether two of the four jets hijacked that day actually brought down the World Trade Center and the U.S. government’s portrayal of the self-avowed terrorist. As for Mendenhall taking exception with people celebrating bin Laden’s death Sunday, I won’t lose any sleep over that, either. Read full article > >

In 1960, after the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees in an electrifying seven-game World Series, the Yankees fired manager Casey Stengel, who had turned 70 in July. The Yankees said he was too old. He said, “I’ll never make the mistake of being 70 again.” It is, however, a coveted mistake, considering the alternative, and remembering how recently it was that passing this milestone became unremarkable. The Bible, with the thumping certitude for which it is famous and sometimes tiresome, asserts that “the days of our years are threescore years and ten.” If so, after turning 70, one has, ever after, the pleasure of playing, as it were, with house money. For what, exactly, would one now give up red meat and dry martinis? Read full article > >

PITTSBURGH — The National Rifle Association is vying to remain relevant in the 2012 presidential election, with a Democratic president who has not made gun control a priority and many NRA members expecting gun issues to take a back seat to the economy, health care and foreign policy.
