Mexican drug kingpin Benjamin Arellano Felix pleads guilty to US charges in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Mexican drug cartel kingpin Benjamin Arellano Felix pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. federal court to racketeering and conspiracy to launder money. The plea avoided the spectacle of a trial for one of the world’s most powerful drug lords of the 1990s. The plea agreement calls for a maximum of 25 years in prison. Federal prosecutors agreed to dismiss other charges that could have brought a sentence of 140 years in prison if convicted. Sentencing was scheduled for April 2. Read full article > >

Second former ICE worker pleads guilty in travel voucher kickback scheme

A former intelligence specialist with Immigration and Customs Enforcement pleaded guilty last week to embezzling more than $50,000, the second agency employee recently convicted in an unfolding travel voucher kickback scheme that stretches from Arizona to Washington. William J. Korn, 53, of Tucson admitted in a plea agreement to a felony charge of aiding and abetting the conversion of public money for his role in the scheme. Read full article > >

A former intelligence analyst with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pleaded guilty Thursday in federal district court in El Paso to stealing at least $70,000 from the government as part of a travel receipt scheme and using a diplomatic passport for personal trips to the Middle East. Ahmed Adil Abdallat, 64, admitted to two counts of misuse of a diplomatic passport and one count of conversion of public money as part of a plea agreement, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Robert Pitman. A former National Archives employee on Tuesday admitted in federal court that he stole nearly 1,000 audio recordings and sold some on eBay. Leslie C. Waffen, 66, who was chief of the Archives’ audiovisual holdings, pleaded guilty to embezzlement of government property. He is scheduled to be sentenced March 5 in federal court in Greenbelt. Md. woman gets 25 years in jealousy-fueled killing

A D.C. Superior Court judge sentenced a Maryland mother of four to 25 years in prison Friday for fatally stabbing another woman last year because she thought the victim was dating her ex-boyfriend. Prosecutors had asked Judge Gerald I. Fisher to sentence Ramona Gray, 31, of District Heights to 26 years after Gray pleaded guilty to the Aug. 31 attack on Shemese A. Grant, 31. Grant was stabbed 18 times in the back in a parking lot outside a deli in the 1700 block of Good Hope Road SE. At a previous hearing, prosecutors showed still photographs from a surveillance camera in the deli that showed Gray waiting inside, looking out the front door and then holding a knife, which Gray had pulled out of her purse, a witness in the store told police. A former Prince George’s County police sergeant admitted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt that he took part in a scheme to smuggle untaxed cigarettes and alcohol from Virginia to Maryland. The guilty plea by Richard J. Delabrer, 47, is part of a sweeping, ongoing federal corruption probe targeting the activities of current and former county elected officials, appointed officials, police officers, developers and other business people. Delabrer, who worked for the police department for nearly 23 years, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit extortion and to a federal firearms violation. Read full article > >
