Lanier’s All Hands on Deck program, which floods the streets with police during select weekends each year. Across the Anacostia River in Northwest, Martin Moulton says his neighborhood near the Walter E. Washington Convention Center struggles with public urination, loitering and other quality-of-life issues. William Fitts, 15, charged in slaying of Thelma Steele, 92, in Prince George’s

Last week, 92-year-old Thelma Steele let a teenager who grew up across the street into her Forestville home, police said. They said the 15-year-old stabbed and beat her, leaving her on a sofa to die. William Roger Fitts was arrested Wednesday and charged as an adult with first-degree murder, Prince George’s County police said. Acting Deputy Police Chief Craig Howard said Fitts’s primary motivation appeared to be robbery. The teen made off with some of Steele’s property, although investigators were trying to determine exactly what was taken, Howard said. Read full article > >

Judge Stephen G. Milliken was waiting at the Gallery Place Metro station for a train Thursday morning when a youth snacked his iPhone from his hand. The D.C. Superior Court judge isn’t alone in having his electronic device stolen. Metro Transit Police said they’ve seen a spike in “snatch-and-grab” robberies of iPhones and similar devices. “We’ve had a great increase in the snatching of iPhones and iPads over the last couple of years, not just here but in transit systems across the country,” Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn said. There was a time — after he had been arrested for drunken driving, left his job as Alexandria’s police chief and spent five days in jail — when a return to public life was the last thing on David P. Baker’s mind. Some days, he says, he was so ashamed he didn’t want to leave his house. But Baker says he has been inspired by the response he has received from people who have heard him tell his story in and around Alexandria — so much so, that he’s contemplating a run for City Council. “The easier thing to do is hide somewhere for a couple of years,” said Baker, 60. “The better way out is to face the circumstances head-on and be prepared to do the right thing, not be afraid to share my lessons with others.” Read full article > >
