CAIRO, Egypt — Egypt’s news agency says a court has passed the first death sentence against a defendant charged with killing protesters during the uprising that toppled President Hosni Mubarak. The death sentence was imposed on an Egyptian police officer, Mohammed Mahmoud, who was tried in absentia. He was convicted of killing at least 20 protesters by randomly firing his rifle, the agency said Sunday. During the 18-day uprising, at least 846 protesters were killed, according government records.
