GRAPEVINE, Texas — Seven people believed to be related had opened their Christmas gifts and started cleaning up the wrapping paper when they were shot to death in a Dallas-area apartment, police said Sunday. Authorities said they believe the shooter is among the dead. NEW YORK — A woman was ambushed in the elevator of her Brooklyn apartment building, doused with a liquid, set ablaze and left to die in a brutal attack that was recorded by two video cameras, police said. Doris Gillespie, 64, burned to death in the elevator Saturday, police said, after an unidentified man who was waiting for her when the elevator doors opened to the fifth floor of the apartment building in Prospect Heights. Third man kidnapped in Wheaton

An elderly man was kidnapped in Wheaton on Sunday and possibly forced to get cash from ATMs in the third such incident in five days, and Montgomery County police said they think all involved the same assailant. The 77-year-old victim was seriously injured when he was cut and beaten in the kidnapping, which, like the others, began at the Westfield Wheaton shopping center, said Capt. CHICAGO — Former Weezer bass player Mikey Welsh, who also found success in his second career as an artist, died in a Chicago hotel room, police said Sunday. Chicago spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said Welsh was supposed to check out of the Raffaello Hotel at 1 p.m. Saturday. KABUL — Former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was appointed last year to head a commission trying to broker a peace deal with the Taliban, was killed inside his Kabul home Tuesday afternoon in a suicide bombing, Afghan officials said.
