Amid all the political commentary these days, Joanne Bamberger is noticing more female voices in the pundit chorus. They may not be the best known analysts or in the “Meet the Press” crowd, but these women have large followings, expansive networks and are discussing the political issues of the day. They come from the ranks of female writers often called “mommy bloggers.” Read full article > >

Haunting the political landscape is the ghost (or soul or spirit or memory or image, depending on how you see these things) of Gabriel Michael Santorum. Born at 19 gestational weeks, too young to live outside the uterus, Gabriel died within two hours. Read full article > >

Two years ago this week, the Supreme Court set the political world on its head by ruling that corporations could spend unlimited money on elections, rolling back decades of legal restrictions. An array of liberal-leaning activist groups are marking the anniversary by launching new efforts to overturn the decision, including calls for a potential constitutional amendment. By this stage of the GOP race, when the votes start tumbling in and the lesser players start tumbling out, we have read most of what there is to know about the six men—and they are indeed now all men—who aim to become the Republican nominee. We’ve read about their political successes and failures. We’ve learned about their families and their backgrounds. We know the quirky tidbits of their lives: Rick Santorum briefly lobbied for the World Wrestling Federation. Ron Paul doesn’t wear his seat belt . Newt Gingrich has an odd fascination with zoos . Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary looms large on the political horizon. In the midst of lively public debates over taxes, jobs, the national debt and similarly important questions related to the future vitality of our nation, a different kind of question continues to privately occupy the minds of some prospective voters: Can I vote for a Mormon ? If you thought all the political action is in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, think again: The race is heating up here in Washington social circles. No drama for Democrats officially rallying together to re-elect President Obama . More interesting to watch: D.C.’s prominent Republicans who are trying to cozy up to the party’s nominee. Back the right horse early enough and you get four years hanging out with the winner. Pick the loser and . . .well, you picked the loser: After George W. Bush prevailed in the 2000 GOP primaries, early backers of John McCain were quietly snubbed by Bush insiders. Read full article > >

This is a moment when policymakers should be thinking big, not small. History will little note nor long remember that the payroll tax holiday was extended for two months rather than 12. The complex and difficult questions we’re avoiding, however, may haunt us through the century. Let me be clear that I applaud President Obama and the Democrats for the political victory they won last week. The impact was to weaken the influence of the most reactionary and clueless faction in Congress — the Tea Party Republicans — and strengthen the hand of both progressives and pragmatic conservatives. This can only be a good thing. Read full article > >

BAGHDAD — The political crisis that has erupted in Iraq widened Tuesday after the country’s Sunni vice president strongly denied terrorism charges leveled against him, alleging that three of his bodyguards gave false confessions after interrogations by Shiite-controlled security forces. Tariq al-Hashimi said he was ready to stand trial, but only in the region to which he has fled: the semiautonomous region of Kurdistan. His statement raised the possibility of the Kurds being dragged into the political battle that has broken out between Shiite and Sunni factions of the country’s central government. The only danger about people like me and Ed saying Ron Paul can never win is that it fuels his anti-establishment cred. Paul has two bases of support: a libertarian base that likes Paul for his consistent purism on stripping government of all but extremely limited powers and a really angry base that is more about creating chaos than philosophy. This second group would like nothing more than to send a giant message of anger to the political establishment, and Paul is a good vehicle for that. Read full article > >
