Is the bar set too high for Libya?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Perhaps it is because the ouster of Moammar Gaddafi will come months after the fall of Tunisia’s Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak , or maybe it is fatigue generated by the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, but the Libyan revolution seems subject to a higher standard of success than the uprisings that preceded it. A curious conventional wisdom has emerged in the commentary on Libya’s revolutionaries. “We don’t know who these people are or what comes next,” the popular reasoning goes, “so we can’t let ourselves be too enthusiastic about them, their goals or their achievements.” Read full article > >

Love, etc.: Date Lab couple Anna Russell and Daniel Zielaski engaged

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Engaged: Policy analyst Anna Russell , 28, and teacher Daniel Zielaski , 27, who are famous for . . . meeting through the Washington Post Magazine’s “Date Lab.” Editors matched them up, noting that they’re both marathoners, and a Monday night fix-up date last May at Oya turned into late-night drinks at Proof, which led to plans to go running together. A year later, Zielaski popped the question on the Georgetown waterfront, midway through a 10-mile run. No wedding date yet, but probably next summer. They’re believed to be the third couple engaged through the popular weekly matchmaking column. (Any others out there with good news to report? Trey McIntyre Project, dancing its dreams at full bore at Harman Hall

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

The two best things about Trey McIntyre Project: the dancers’ easy facility with all kinds of rebounding, whip-snapping moves — the bigger the better — and the music. Not to be discounted are the satisfactions of an evening spent with early jazz from New Orleans’s Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the gentle rhythms and unsparing revelations of Roy Orbison. McIntyre, the 6-foot-6 former ballet dancer and crackerjack choreographer of the popular song, seems to attract an ardent following wherever he goes — even when it’s far off the beaten path for an artist in the niche world of dance. In 2008, he moved his contemporary dance company to Boise, Idaho, which has proved to be a fertile home base for bustling seasons of national and international tours. Read full article > >
