Some Republican lawmakers wary of Newt Gingrich presidential nomination

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Republicans on Capitol Hill are increasingly worried about the potential of a Newt Gingrich presidential nomination, fearful that the former House speaker’s reputation for volatility could drive away independent voters and jeopardize GOP prospects for controlling Congress in 2013. Just a few months ago, Gingrich was an afterthought in the campaign. Syrian soldiers killed in clashes with defectors in the south; as many as 90 killed nationwide

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

BEIRUT — Dozens of soldiers and security forces were gunned down by suspected army defectors in southern Syria, a deadly ambush that comes as President Bashar Assad increasingly appears unable to manage the crisis, activists said Tuesday. Monday’s hours-long clash in the southern province of Daraa came on a particularly bloody day in Syria, with as many as 90 people killed across the country. The bacteria (or virus or parasite) made me do it

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Those who believe in free will might be troubled to learn a few secrets about viruses, bacteria and parasites. While it may sound like science fiction, science hints at the potential for microbes to influence our minds, or at least our behavior. Friday’s p-Op quiz: ‘Moussa Koussa’ Edition

Friday, April 1st, 2011

After the president spoke to the nation, a former foreign minister fled his nation. Meanwhile, Congress is negotiating — or not, depending on who you talk to — over the budget. And the potential GOP field has more wives, war positions, birthers and snark to last a lifetime. That’s not quite everything that happened this week. But it might be enough to pass this week’s p-Op quiz. A p-Op hat tip to @kriseisenla for this week’s quiz name.
