Federal employee recognition bill clears House

A bill to authorize the presentation of flags to the survivors of federal employees killed in the line of duty passed the House on Wednesday and now moves to the Senate. The Civilian Service Recognition Act passed on a 425-0 vote with the support of organizations representing federal employees and the American Legion, which initially objected to the measure as a move to equate civilian service with military service. MEXICO CITY — Hours after his capture, authorities paraded the alleged mass murderer Oscar Osvaldo Garcia before the news media to have his picture taken. This performance — called “the presentation” — is an almost daily ritual in Mexico. What is new: Mexican law enforcement officers are increasingly bolstering these high-profile “perp walks” with edited video clips of the accused confessing their crimes on camera. A delegation of politicians and community activists gathered on August 7 in La Leonesa, a small farm town in Argentina, to hear Dr. Andres Carrasco speak about a study linking a popular herbicide to birth defects in Argentina’s agricultural areas. But the presentation never happened. A mob of about 100 people attacked the delegation before they could reach the local school where the talk was to be held. read more
