PRESIDENT OBAMA and Vice President Biden took care to mention human rights during their meetings on Tuesday with China’s incoming leader, Xi Jinping. The president devoted one vaguely worded sentence to the subject during his greeting of Mr. Xi at the Oval Office; Mr. Biden stretched that to three during a toast at the State Department, in which he observed that “conditions in China have deteriorated.” Mr. Xi, who has appeared to have adopted the script of his predecessor, Hu Jintao, during a tightly controlled tour, offered the standard reply that China had made great progress in human rights but that there was “always room for improvement.” Read full article > >

The U.S. Secret Service faces the daunting task of providing security on the presidential campaign trail and for at least six major national security events in the coming year, its director said Wednesday. Director Mark Sullivan told House members that 2012 will be “a very demanding and challenging year” as the agency provides protection for President Obama, Vice President Biden, their families, former presidents, visiting foreign dignitaries, GOP candidates and the Republican Party’s eventual presidential nominee. Passenger jets nearly collide after Biden plane lands in Chicago

Confusion after Vice President Biden landed in Chicago on Monday almost resulted in a collision between two passenger planes just above the tarmac at O’Hare International Airport , according to federal officials and air traffic recordings. The near-collision involved a pair of 50-seat, twin-engine commuter jets, one inbound from Muskegon, Mich., and the other taking off for Buffalo. The planes came within 300 feet of colliding, a crash that was averted as an angry pilot and a surprised air traffic controller expressed their dismay with expletives. Read full article > >
