As Venezuela halts new prison admissions, cells at police stations are filling up

CARACAS, Venezuela — Holding cells in Venezuelan police stations have begun to fill up a week after a government order to temporarily halt new admissions to the country’s overcrowded and violent prisons. Some police chiefs said Wednesday the lockups in their stations are either at capacity or nearly full as a result of the order for prisons to stop accepting new inmates for a month. The order came last week from President Hugo Chavez’s newly appointed prisons minister, Iris Varela. Police Chief Manuel Furelos of Caracas’ Sucre district said many local police forces are running out of room in their holding cells. Read full article > >

HAVANA — A Venezuelan vice president says President Hugo Chavez is recovering well a day after undergoing surgery in Cuba for a pelvic abscess. Chavez is “very up to date on all issues relating to our country,” Venezuelan Vice President Rafael Ramirez says, adding that he had saw Chavez personally on Friday following the procedure, and again on Saturday. “Comandante Chavez is well, and in the process of recuperation,” he said in comments broadcast on Cuba’s Saturday evening state-run newscast.
