The White House has authorized an independent review of all loan guarantees made by the Energy Department to foster green technology following the bankruptcy this year of Solyndra, the California company that received a $535 million loan through the program. White House officials said Friday that Chief of Staff William Daley ordered the review that will evaluate the entire $35.9 billion loan portfolio made to support the private-sector development of new technologies that could help improve the economy and create jobs. BRUSSELS — Private investors in Greek bonds would need to accept losses of at least 50 percent to stabilize Greece’s finances, according to a joint European and International Monetary Fund analysis that has put bankers and politicians at loggerheads over how to bail out the country once and for all. The contribution is more than double what a banking industry group agreed to over the summer. But Greece’s cratering economy and public opposition to more taxpayer-supported loans is putting pressure on private investors to fund a growing gap in the country’s rescue program. HAMPTON, Va. — President Obama will use an appearance at a military base here Wednesday to announce a partnership with the private sector to employ 25,000 veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars over the next two years, White House officials said. Obama has been touring the region by bus to promote his plans to create public sector jobs. But, with his $447 billion American Jobs Act stalled in Congress, Obama also has called on the private sector to help reduce an unemployment rate of 11.7 percent among veterans , above the national average of 9.1 percent. City tells NY protesters they must leave park for cleaning but can return

NEW YORK — Protesters will have to clear out of the private Manhattan park where they’ve been camped out for nearly a month so the owners can clean it, but they’ll be allowed to return afterward, city officials said. Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said in a statement Wednesday that the protest has “created unsanitary conditions and considerable wear and tear on the park.” He said Brookfield Properties asked for police help to clear Zuccotti Park so it can be cleaned.
