‘Devil Inside’: Low-budget, low-concept, zero-plausibility horror movie

Saturday, January 7th, 2012

The premise of “ The Devil Inside ” is that supernatural evil is contagious. But, hey, we knew that. New Year’s Eve: An intimate dinner for friends

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

No matter how old I get or how much I procreate, the elders in the family always seem to cover the Christmas meals. Sure, I pitch in by taking over a tradition or two — braiding the Christmas breakfast wreath or assembling the trifle for Christmas dinner — but I have yet to actually host. My duties don’t really kick in until the next week, for New Year’s Eve. And that is a meal I like to dive into, deeply. It started the year a friend needed to break in a new kitchen at a little beach house, and I was a newly minted food writer. I threw myself into the project, the perfect marriage of my personal and professional selves. The menu featured fish from the nearby dock, wine from a local vineyard and a collection of other courses with recipes I’d loved, and in some cases published, during the year. Read full article > >

A cheap eats smackdown: New York vs. Washington

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

NEW YORK — As we sit in a booth at Maialino in the Gramercy Park Hotel, devouring a roast-pork-and-fried-egg sandwich good enough to heal the sick, two of Ed Levine’s staffers start dishing about their boss’s myopia in selecting his favorite haunts for “Serious Eats: A Comprehensive Guide to Making & Eating Delicious Food Wherever You Are.” Apparently, Levine wanted to lard a category or two in Serious Eats ’ debut book with New York City restaurants, which could have instantly undercut the national scope of the project. For months, a bitter debate engulfed Northern Virginia over where to build a new Metro station at Dulles International Airport, part of the second phase of a 23-mile rail line intended to stretch into Loudoun County . Art review: ‘Ten Years After 9/11’ displays 39 artists’ reaction to attacks

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

In the years between the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and today, there have been many attempts to make art in response to the tragedy. The resulting works have been sentimental, overblown, angry, poetic, polemic, maudlin, mysterious, clumsy, subtle and beautiful. All of those qualities are on display at the Edison Place Gallery , where a showcase of work by 39 artists is marking this weekend’s anniversary. Part of the multi-site 9/11 Arts Project, “Ten Years After 9/11” is, unsurprisingly, an uneven show. It is also, at times, kind of wonderful. Read full article > >

Wind farms under fire for bird kills

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Six birds found dead recently in Southern California’s Tehachapi Mountains were majestic golden eagles. But some bird watchers say that in an area where dozens of wind turbines slice the air they were also sitting ducks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is investigating to determine what killed the big raptors, and declined to divulge the conditions of the remains. But the likely cause of death is no mystery to wildlife biologists who say they were probably clipped by the blades of some of the 80 wind turbines at the three-year-old Pine Tree Wind Farm Project , operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
