Labor boss Richard Trumka is not one to nibble around the edges. He declined a plate of bacon and eggs when sitting down to breakfast with a group of reporters this week because, the AFL-CIO president explained, he was concerned he might spit out a mouthful if he didn’t like a question. The stains on his Brooks Brothers necktie suggested this was more than a theoretical possibility. So perhaps it should not be a surprise that Trumka has lost patience with the Great Nibbler in our civic life, President Obama. The president, he complained, has been doing “little nibbly things around the edge that aren’t going to make a difference and aren’t going to solve the problem” with the economy. Obama, he protested, decided to “work with the Tea Party to offer cuts to middle-class programs like Social Security.” And, Trumka accused, Obama has limited his proposals to “those little things that he thinks others will immediately accept.” Read full article > >

Auction kicks off for U.S. Olympic broadcast rights

The financial and political well-being of the U.S. Olympic Committee rests in part on the price the International Olympic Committee can command for U.S. Olympic broadcast rights during a two-day auction that kicked off Monday in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IOC is expected to award the rights for the 2014 and 2016 Olympics — and possibly the 2018 and 2020 Games — late Tuesday after NBC, ESPN and Fox submit sealed bids. Fox gave a presentation outlining a plan for four Games on Monday, a source with knowledge of the talks said; NBC and ESPN will present their proposals Tuesday. Read full article > >

SEC proposes new rules for ratings firms

Regulators took new steps Wednesday to overhaul the firms whose rosy credit ratings inspired overconfidence in investments tied to toxic mortgages . The Securities and Exchange Commission proposed rules meant to improve the system by which such firms as Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s assign ratings. Some of the proposals are intended to address conflicts of interest that could undermine the objectivity of the ratings. Read full article > >
