The Washington Monument’s elevator system was damaged by last month’s earthquake and has to be repaired, the National Park Service said Monday. The elevator is operating only to the 250-foot level of the 550-foot monument, the Park Service said, adding that the mechanism is believed to have been damaged by its counterweights during the quake. LIMA, Peru — A strong but deep earthquake shook a sparsely populated northern jungle region on Wednesday near Brazil’s border. There were no reports of damage or injuries. The quake had a magnitude of 7.0 and was centered 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the jungle city of Pucallpa, said Peru’s Geophysical Institute and the U.S. Geological Survey. It was felt mildly in the capital, Lima. But in Pucallpa, buildings shook, trees swayed, and people headed out into the street. The agencies said the quake struck at 12:46 p.m. local time (1:46 p.m. EDT; 1746 GMT), centered 90 miles (145 kilometers) underground. The deeper the quake, the less it is likely to cause damage. ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish rescue workers and soldiers scrambled Friday to set up tents to shelter hundreds of people left homeless after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake damaged buildings in western Turkey, killing at least three people. No one was reported buried under the rubble in the town of Simav, the epicenter of the quake, but one man died after jumping out of a window in panic while an 18-year-old high school student was killed when he was hit by a falling piece of stone as he stood outside his home, the Anatolia news agency said. An elderly woman died of a heart attack in another town, Inegol, shortly after the quake rocked the region late Thursday. Read full article > >
