Vandals torch West Bank mosque, Jewish extremists suspected

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

JERUSALEM — Defying a crackdown on Jewish extremists ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, vandals set fire to a mosque in the West Bank on Thursday and defaced it with Hebrew graffiti after Israeli forces tore down structures in an unauthorized settlement outpost. The arson attack in the Palestinian village of Burqa, near Ramallah, was the latest in a string of similar attacks on mosques in the West Bank. Germany’s shoppers are still spending

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

BERLIN — Amid crushing unemployment, slashed benefits and deep pessimism about Europe’s future stands one beacon of cheer this holiday season: Germany, where shoppers are spending more than they have in years. The country whose leaders have the most power to address the euro crisis is also the one that has been most insulated from its effects, resulting in an unhurried pace to address the continent’s problems as others gnash their teeth. While Germany preaches the virtues of governments not spending more than they have, its own means have proved expansive, with unemployment the lowest in decades and government benefits largely untouched. A Lesson Not Yet Learned: How the Left in Israel has Hijacked the Memory of Yitzhak Rabin

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

This month, in what is now called Rabin Square, an event took place marking the 16th anniversary of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin at a peace rally by right-wing radical Yigal Amir. The commemoration began at around 7:30 PM Saturday night, with thousands showing up to pay their respects to the late Prime Minister. Many, including Yossi Sarid of the Meretz Party, Hagit Ofran of Peace Now, and Eldad Yaniv of the National Left, spoke to those gathered, offering Israel’s struggling and wounded left-wing words of solace and encouragement.

“There Has Not Been a Peace Process; There Has Been an Annexation Process”: Norman Finkelstein Discusses the Israel-Palestine Conflict

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Though several YouTube clips portray him as a radical, many of Dr. Norman Finkelstein’s ideas and resolutions to the Israel-Palestine conflict are so reasonable that it is no wonder his opponents try to silence and/or discredit him (in fact, an acquaintance of mine complained he wasn’t radical enough!). Speakers can easily be put-down as “extremist” or “anti-Semitic” when their ideas are radically out of the norm. But with Finkelstein these labels go down like a lead balloon.

Iran’s supreme leader floats proposal to abolish presidency

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

TEHRAN — A proposal by Iran’s supreme leader to radically alter the country’s constitution and abolish the presidency is drawing praise from his supporters but criticism from influential politicians. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was appointed supreme leader for life in 1989 by Shiite Muslim clerics, said in a speech last week that, if deemed appropriate, Iran could do without a president. The post is currently held by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, whose 2009 reelection was disputed by opponents and led to months of street protests. Read full article > >
